Gurthie Virginia Sexton

Gurthie Virginia Sexton, age 90, a resident of Highland Home, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008 in a Luverne hospital. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 1 from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Highland Home. Elders Chris Smith, Greg Sexton and John Nimmer officiated Mrs. Sexton’s funeral services. Interment followed in the Sardis Cemetery with Harrison Funeral Home directing.

A visitation was held Wednesday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

She is survived by: daughters, Carolyn Sipper of Luverne and Erline Lowe of Highland Home; a sister, Lillie Mae Hayes of Ozark; six grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren.

Mrs. Sexton was preceded in death by her husband, John Rufus Sexton; sisters, Lillian Best and Mammie Lee Beasley and a brother, Orden White.

Kenneth H. Woods

Kenneth H. Woods, 94, a resident of Luverne, died Tuesday, April 29, 2008. Chapel services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 2, 2008 with the Rev. William Burns officiating and Dunklin 7 Daniels Funeral Home directing.

Family received friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. prior to the service.

Mr. Woods is preceded in death by three wives. He is survived by: a daughter and son-in-law, Ethel and M.E. Teague of Luverne; granddaughter, Cheryl and Mike Vaughan of Charlotte, N.C.; great-grandson, Michael Vaughan of Knoxville; great-granddaughter, Angela Vaughan of Charlotte, and three nieces, Ella Mae Schmidt, Lois Smith-Rohly and Ann Williams.

Joseph P. Williamson

Joseph Paskel Williamson, 27, a resident of Honoraville, died Saturday, April 26, 2008. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 from Siloam Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery with Turner Funeral Home of Luverne directing. Mr. Williamson was preceded in death by two brothers, Irby Wayne Brook and Scott H. Williams. Survivors include: his mother, Janie Williamson of Honoraville; his father, Joseph M. Williamson of Luverne; two brothers, Timothy (Michelle) Brook of Rutledge and Phillip (Janet) Williams of Honoraville and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mylan Murphy Odom

Mylan Murphy Odom, 88, a resident of McKenzie, died Monday, April 28, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband Rogene Odom and son, Lamar Odom. Funeral services were 10 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2008 from the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Dwight Vickrey and Alan Odom officiating. Burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery with Johnson Funeral Home of Georgiana directing. Survivors include: a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Sue and Winston Blackburn of River Ridge, La.; daughter-in-law, Bobbi Odom of McKenzie; sister, Betty Mosley of Mobile; six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

Vermon L. Free

Vermon (Punk) L. Free, age 76, a resident of Old Bolling Rd., Greenville, died Saturday, April 26, 2008. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 28, 2008 from the chapel of Harrison Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Mayberry officiating. Interment followed in Sunrise Memorial Park with Harrison Funeral Home directing. A visitation was held Sunday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Survivors include: son, Lewis Free of Huntsville, Donald Free, Johnny Free and Mark Free, all of Greenville; daughters, Doris Reaves and Dorothy Mayberry, both of Greenville; sisters, Mae Stokes of Selma, Opal Misseldine of Millbrook and Ann Hudson of Texarkana, Ark.; brothers, James T. Free of Selma, Herman Free of Prattville and Lenard Free of Selma; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Betty Gorum Dubose

Betty Gorum Dubose, age 65, a former resident of McKenzie, died Wednesday, April 24, 2008 in Atmore. She was preceded in death by her parents, Comer and Minnie Gorum and one brother, Earl Gorum. She is survived by two sons, Michael Dubose and Dewayne Dubose of Andalusia; one daughter, Theresa Dubose Mothershed of Illinois; four sisters, Margie Palmer of Prattville, Barbara Gomillion and Olen Merritt of McKenzie and Jewel Halford of Red Level; two brothers, George and CW Gorum of Andalusia; grandchildren, Tessa M. Sutton of Atmore, Amanda Bush, Eric Bush and Joshua Mothershed of Andalusia and eight great-grandchildren.

Services were held on Monday, April 28 at 2 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home of Georgiana. Visitation was from noon until funeral time on Monday. Burial followed in Gorum Cemetery with Johnson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mary Louise Brown

Mary Louise Brown, age 79, a resident of Greenville, died April 28, 2008. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 3, 2008 at noon at Hickory Street Church of Christ in Greenville with Brother William Rudolph officiating.

Interment will be at Magnolia Cemetery with Serenity Chapel directing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Brown Sr. and three children, Willie, Johnny and Shirley Brown.

She leaves to cherish her memories sons Robert (Betty) Brown Jr. of Flushing, N.Y., Charlie (Elizabeth) Brown and Kenneth (Agatha) Brown of Greenville, Michael Brown, David (Sharon) Brown and Charles (Lonnie) Gilchrist of Montgomery; daughters, Cathy Boykins of Greenville, Sharon (Charlie) Cook, Jacqueline (Lamar) Latimore and Brenda (Bruce) Giles of Montgomery; two sisters, Betty Rogers of Greenville and Linda (James) Newton of Lanette; two brothers, Eugene Brown and Willie Marie Brown; 26 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

The body will lie in repose for two hours prior to the funeral services at Serenity Funeral Chapel, 112 S. College St. in Greenville.
