It’s that time of year again.

The kids are going back to school.

Football season is upon us.

Yep, it’s August.

Unfortunately for us in Alabama, that also means that it’s so hot that the life span of a popsicle is somewhere in the 10 second range.

Earlier this week, I was heading out to Greenville’s football practice and it was only 97 degrees.

The heat index was also a measly 107.

From all indications, that’s the way it’s going to be this entire week, with little chance of cooling off.

Even after the sun goes down, the temperature is still in the mid-80s.

With all of this heat, people need to take care if you’re going to be outside.

I know, I know - I’m 22 and I already sound like somebody’s mother.

I know what it’s like to be outside in the scorching heat while people are passing out around you.

All you’ve got to do is use some common sense.

Wear loose-fitting, light-colored clothing that will reflect some of the sunlight.

Try not to be outside for any longer than you have to.

Wear sunscreen.

And most importantly, keep yourself hydrated.

It may seem like you’re drinking too much, but trust me, even though you’re drinking more fluids than you’re used to, you’ll find that you’re not making as many bathroom runs.

Lots of carbonated drinks have so much sugar that they don’t quench your thirst and can actually make it worse.

Water is the best thing, and stuff like Gatorade and Powerade is good too.

I’ve been to a couple of high school football practices, and I’m happy to say that the coaches are giving the kids water breaks at every possible chance.

Even though I don’t have a child out there, it makes me feel better that these coaches are taking care of Butler County’s athletes.

These guidelines are just for coaches and athletes - they apply to everyone.

Maybe you’re going to be outside working in the yard or going for a walk.

Whatever the case may be, just take care and use common sense, and you’ll be fine on these days that are hotter than a billy goat in a pepper patch.
