Following last year's 10-3 record, the 2007 Greenville High football team began its quest to top last season Monday as the Tigers participated in the first practice of the spring for more than two hours.

&#8220It was a typical first day,” Greenville head coach Bryant Vincent said. &#8220The excitement, intensity was good, but I feel like wed have a lot of things to work on.”

&#8220We just need to become a physical, smash-mouth football team,” he added.

One of the bright spots Vincent saw during the two-hour workout in helmets and pads was the offensive line.

&#8220The offensive line was, for the first day, looking like they can be a strong unit,” Vincent said.

Although quarterback Casey Weston will be back next year for his senior season, senior Brandon &#8220The Diesel” Cheatham will be in the Faulkner University backfield in the fall, meaning the Tigers need someone to step up to fill the void left by Cheatham.

In the running to replace Cheatham are Charleston Lymon, Cordez Peagler and Derrick Brown, but Vincent said the players will determine who the next starting running back is.

During Greenville's first spring practice, the Tigers worked on position drills before taking to the boards for &#8220Tiger Pride” drills.

During &#8220Tiger Pride” drills, the offensive players go head-to-head with their defensive counterparts as they straddle wooden boards to keep a wide base for leverage.

Several of the showdowns drew spirited responses from the team and coaches.

The Tigers will continue practice this week, culminating with a scrimmage at Tiger Stadium Friday at 5 p.m.

The Tigers will do the same next week and scrimmage on May 11th at 5 p.m.

Both scrimmages are open to the public.

Greenville will travel to Highland Home May 18 for the spring jamboree game.

The Flying Squadron defeated the Tigers last season, 14-12.
