Tennis time

The defending state champion Fort Dale Academy girl's tennis team got off to a hot start this week as the Eagles began the 2007 season Wednesday with a 6-1 win over the Morgan Senators.

During the matches, Fort Dale took five of its six wins in straight sets.

In the first match up, Fort Dale's Whitney Jacks defeated Morgan's Amy McGucken 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

On the No. 3 court, Elizabeth Dunklin defeated Laura Talton 6-2, 6-2, followed by Renee Scott defeating Jamie Pilcher 6-2, 6-0 on court No. 4 and Ulli Sandstrom defeating Caroline Sherrer 6-3, 6-4 on court No. 5.

Morgan's Rachael Sherrer had the only win for the Senators with a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Kayla Butts on court No. 2.

In doubles competition, Jacks and Butts defeated McGucken and Pilcher 6-4, 6-1 and Dunklin and Scott defeated Rachael Sherrer and Talton 6-4, 6-2.

The girl's and boy's tennis teams will return to action Tuesday at home as they take in Monroe Academy at 3 p.m.

In boy's action:

Following the torrential downpour Thursday, the Fort Dale Academy boy's tennis team took to the court Friday to host the Morgan Academy Senators.

Although the girl's nearly swept Morgan, the boy's were not as fortunate as the Senators emerged with a 5-2 win.

During the first match up, Andrew Jones defeated Reese Armstrong 6-0, 6-3. Jones would be the only Eagle player to win a singles match.

On court No. 2, Morgan's Rhett Rhyne defeated Stephen Butts 6-2, 6-3, followed by Houston Searcy defeating Fort Dale's Logan Ausderau 6-0, 6-0, Cain Sommerville defeating Fort Dale's Sean McKeague 6-0, 6-0 and Arata Meada defeating David Foshee 6-4, 6-1.

In double's action, Jones was once again victorious as he and Butts defeated Searcy and Meada 6-4, 6-4, while Ausderau and McKeague dropped their match with Rhyne and Sommerville 6-1, 6-0.
