Looney said administrators at Georgiana, Greenville and McKenzie have taken necessary precautions to ensure the safety of their students and are keeping up to date with the latest weather information.

While some school systems in Alabama cancelled classes at the first approach of bad weather, Looney said he was advised by the EMA to keep students at school in order to avoid having buses on the roadways during the storms.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Butler County and central and southern Alabama that lasts until 8 p.m.
