n First Missionary 136th Church Anniversary

First Missionary Baptist Church, Rev. R.F. McCreary, on Perry and South Streets, will celebrate its 136th church anniversary at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 26, 2006. Guest speaker will be Rev. Harold Simpson, pastor of Butler Chapel A.M.E. Zion of Greenville. The public is invited.

n Friendship’s Annual Family and Friends Day

Friendship Baptist Church of Georgiana (First Colored Baptist Church) and Pastor O.J. Meeks celebrate their annual Friends and Family Day at 3 p.m. November 26, 2006. Special guests are the members of Second Missionary Baptist Church, also of Georgiana. Historically, the churches were combined until their amicable separation in January 1927; a new church was started on the north end of town, which became Second Missionary Baptist Church. This year an extra-special, old-fashioned reunion has been planned between the two churches. Rev. Donald Colley Jr., assistant pastor of Second Baptist, will deliver the sermon, in the scheduled absence of pastor Rev. C.L. Reed. Call 334-376-2843 for additional questions.

Baseball and softball umpires are needed for high school and Greenville Parks and Rec. No experience needed; we will train you. n Greenville Christmas Parade and Park Festival

The Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce hosts its annual Christmas Parade at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2.

n Three Arts Club Xmas Bazaar

The Three Arts Club of Georgiana and Chapman is holding its annual bazaar 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 at Platt House /Rose Memorial Library (white building behind police station) in Georgiana. Christmas decorations, arts and crafts and baked goods will be offered, box lunch tickets also for sale.

n Friendship Baptist-Bolling Celebrates Deacons

Friendship Baptist Church in the Bolling Community, Rev. C.C. Bradley, invites everyone to the First Appreciation for the Deacons at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3. Saturday night’s musical program includes The Gospel Harmonaires and The Gospel Angels; all groups, choirs and soloists are invited to come and render an A and B selection. n Bill J. Brooks Christmas Concert

Bill J. Brooks of Tupelo, Miss. will return to the Camellia City for two shows at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Ritz Theatre. Matinee is free to all senior citizens; evening show is just $5 per person, with proceeds going to Greenville Senior Center. The combined choirs of Mt. Pleasant Baptist, First Methodist of Georgiana and First Baptist of Georgiana will present &uot;The Thrill of Hope&uot; Christmas Musical. Performances will be at 6 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant, McKenzie Grade Road, Sunday, December 10, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 17 at First Baptist of Georgiana. The musical is under direction of Tim Sims.

n Ms. Glorious Gospel Lady Pageant

The New Hope Christian Church’s CWF is sponsoring its first annual Ms. Glorious lady Gospel Pageant Competition slated for 7 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 2007 at the Fort Deposit Municipal Complex. All Lowndes and Butler County Church families are invited to join us. Five contestants from each church family, age 17 to 30 years old, encouraged to participate.

n MOPS at Southside

Moms who need a break are invited to join MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) at Southside Baptist Church. Meetings begin January 2007. Teaching, discussion, creative projects, and community are offered for all mothers with children from birth through kindergarten. Child care is provided. n Disabled American Veterans seek new members

The Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Unit 67 is seeking new members. The unit meets every fourth Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the American Legion Building at the Butler County Fairgrounds.

The unit also has a junior program for ages newborn to age 17.

The unit won first place for community service in the 10 to 50-member category at state competition.

Unit 67 Commander is Alberta Johnson.

n Free Tutoring Classes

&uot;Every Child Deserves A Chance&uot; is now offering free tutoring classes in the areas of reading, English and math on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Greenville Housing Authority Recreation Room to students enrolled in Butler County Schools in grades K-12. n Adult Education Classes

The ADPE through the LBWCC Adult Education Consortium is offering classes for adults who did not complete their high school education or need to strengthen educational and job skills.

Old Greenville High Campus (BCECC) – 6 to 8:30 p.m.

The Greenville Chess Club meets on Monday evenings from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Butler Baptist Associational Office, 309 South Pine Street.

n County Commission

The meeting time for the Butler County Commission’s regularly scheduled second-Monday meetings has been changed from 10 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Workshops for each regularly scheduled meeting will still be held on the prior Thursday at 6 p.m.

n Athletic Club Meeting

The public is invited to participate at scheduled Greenville High Athletic Club meetings at 6 p.m. every other Monday in the high school cafeteria. The public is encouraged to attend and share ideas toward building a championship-level athletic department.

n 21st Century After School Program

The Butler County School System will offer after school programs for K-8th grade students beginning August 14. Programs are available Mondays – Fridays through 5 p.m. for $25 per month at each of the following schools: W.O. Parmer, Greenville Elementary, Greenville Middle, R.L. Austin, and Georgiana High (7th & 8th grades). Registration is available at the school offices, at the Education & Community Center, and at www.butlerco.k12.al.us
