It's been a long time since the outcome of a Greenville High School football game has ended 49-6 with the Tigers emerging victorious, but just that happened Friday night as Bryant Vincent's squad downed the Monroe County Tigers.

Although the outcome ended lopsided, the game did not start out that way.

With seven defensive starters held out of the first drive for disciplinary reasons, the Tigers could not stop Monroe as County drove 63 yards in 12 plays on the game's opening drive for a score.

The Greenville offense, and defense, responded to Monroe County's touchdown as Charleston Lymon rushed nine yards for the score and after a successful two-point conversion, the Tigers led 8-6 and never looked back.

&#8220I'm most proud of how our offense answered with a good drive,” Vincent said.

The Greenville defense stepped up next when Josh Longmire blocked a Monroe County punt and Jamontay Pilson ran it in 20 yards for the touchdown.

After Marcus Mickles grabbed an interception on the next Monroe County drive, quarterback Casey Weston connected with Lynn Lewis for a 39-yard touchdown to make the score 22-6 following the extra point.

Weston once again connected with Lewis for another touchdown to make the score 29-6 and then the Tigers closed out the first half with a three-yard touchdown run by Michael Peagler.

Although Weston started the second half, freshman Ryan Smith came in for relief on the opening drive of the half and scored on a three-yard to put the Tigers up 42-6.

After Tom Powell recovered a fumble for the Greenville defense, Smith connected with Christian Williams for a five-yard touchdown pass. Jerald Scott added the extra point with 22 seconds to go as the Tigers clinched the fourth win of the season.

Offensively for Greenville, Weston was 5-of-8 for 81 yards passing and two touchdowns while Smith was 7-of-9 with a touchdown pass and run.

&#8220Ryan came in and played great,” Vincent said of his freshman. &#8220He proved tonight that he can be a great quarterback at Greenville.”

On the defensive side of the ball, the Tigers held Monroe County to just 18 yards following the game's opening touchdown drive.

&#8220They have the mindset that nobody is going to score or move the ball on them,” Greenville defensive coordinator Ernest Hill said about his defense.

Hill, who graduated from Valley High, next week's opponent, said he is ready for next week's opponent and his defense must step up to the challenge.

&#8220We've got to prepare next week and our scout team has to do a good job of (emulating) Valley,” Hill said. &#8220We've got to attack first because, if we don't, (Valley) will.”

This week's game against Valley will be the second time in three weeks that the Tigers have faced a Top 10 team and Vincent said his team must be ready.

&#8220Valley is a great football team and they are going to come in here, probably 5-0, and with a lot of confidence,” Vincent said. &#8220It's going to be a big-time atmosphere and we've got to be prepared to execute.”

Kickoff for Friday night's game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
