The buses are all gassed up in Georgiana with nowhere to go.

Citing lack of security, games in Baldwin County, including the Georgiana at Bayside Academy game, have been postponed according to Dan Washburn, executive director of the Alabama High School Athletic Association.

Games in Mobile County also have been postponed by recommendation of the local Emergency Management Agency citing gas shortages throughout the area.

Georgiana (1-0) was supposed to travel to Daphne Friday to face the Admirals (1-0) in the teams' Region 1, Class 2A opener.

Now the question is when will the game be made up.

"Right now, no day has been set," Panthers coach Greg Ennis said. "I would love to play them Saturday if possible."

Bayside coach D.D. Thompson there is little to no chance the game would be made up this weekend.

"I don't think people understand what's going on down here," Thompson said. "I had to turn around this morning to get my wife's car to come to work because I didn't want to sit in line for three hours to get gas.

"Football isn't everything considering people are in a big crunch down here. Of course it could be worse and there just not be any football at all like it is in southern Mississippi and Louisiana."

Ennis said he would not be in favor of playing on Monday, since that would give the Panthers just three days to prepare for their upcoming region game with Southern Choctaw.

"I feel sorry for what they are having to go through with the horrible devastation along the Gulf Coast area, but in my opinion playing a football game would people to get their minds off the hurricane just a few hours," Ennis added.

Washburn said that he was told by Thompson that a Monday night game would not be possible to because security would not be available.

Bayside also was working on a short week. The Daphne area school did not reopen until Wednesday morning, giving the Admirals just two days to prepare for a Friday night game. Thompson said that he did not have his entire team at school to practice until Thursday.

Possible makeup dates for both could fall during the teams' remaining non-region dates of Sept. 23 and Oct. 28.

"That would not be a mandate by this association," Washburn said. "I know there are teams that have their rivalry games during that time. But they would need to find a suitable makeup date as soon as possible."

Georgiana's non-region games include county rival McKenzie in three weeks.

"They are a traditional rival, so I would not want to cancel that game," Ennis said. "And I'm pretty sure (coach) David (Kirkland) would agree with me on that."

The Panthers' other non-region game falls on Oct. 28 against St. Jude.

"That game would be more of a possibility although that's scheduled to be our homecoming game," Ennis said.

Washburn said there is no chance the football season would be pushed back a week like it was following the arrival of Hurricane Ivan last year.

"We don't anticipate going to such a drastic move," Washburn said.
