A car accident west of Rutledge on Highway 10 claimed the life of a Greenville man on Friday afternoon.

According to Sgt. Tommy Waters, spokesperson for the Alabama State Troopers, Desmond Grace was ejected from the front seat of a 2002 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Dorothy Roseman. Waters said, Roseman, also of Greenville, lost control of the automobile and crashed into a group of trees along the side of the road.

Grace was pronounced dead on the scene.

The car was eastbound on Highway 10, said Waters. Roseman was wearing her seatbelt and was treated for injuries at L.V. Stabler Memorial Hospital in Greenville. She was released later in the day.

Waters said the cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Grace was one of at least 13 people killed in accidents on state highways this past weekend. The Alabama Department of Public Safety reported on Monday that at least 12 people were killed between 6 p.m. Friday and midnight Sunday. The deaths occurred in 10 different counties, including Tuscaloosa, Colbert, Limestone, Mobile, St. Clair, Talladega, Escambia, Shelby, Chambers and DeKalb counties.
