Crenshaw Christian Academy was handed its second loss of the season by area foe Lowndes Academy last Friday night in Hayneville. CCA slipped to 2-2 and 2-1 in area play with the 28-13 loss.
Senior tailback Bubba Faulk turned in another fine effort on both sides of the ball. Faulk rushed for 131 yards on 32 carries and notched both Cougar tallies plus kicked one extra point. He also snagged a pass for 10 yards and was credited with five solo stops and two assists on defense.
Middle linebacker Foster Carpenter led all defenders with nine solo kills and a fumble recovery. Also turning in fine defensive efforts were Shawn Nelson with five solos and five assists, Derek Manning with five tackles and an interception, Sloan Carter with a 4-1 chart and Brandon Polk with four solos.
Quarterback Klein Jones connected on five of 19 passes for 62 yards and threw one interception. Corey Walden reeled in three tosses for 45 yards and Caleub Mount caught one pass good for seven yards. Fullback Sloan Carter rounded out the rushing attack with 33 yards on seven carries.
The Cougars looked poised to notch their third area win of the season as they took the field at Rebel stadium. CCA took the opening kickoff from their 35-yard-line and marched deep into Rebel territory.
After Faulk converted on a fourth and two run with a six-yard burst to the Lowndes 27-yard-line disaster struck. Jones’ pass intended for Walden was tipped into the waiting arms of a Rebel defender at their own 3-yard-line to snuff out the Cougar scoring threat.
It took the Rebel offense only four plays to drive 97 yards and take a 6-0 lead at the 5:58 mark in the first period.
But the Cougars responded two possessions later when Carpenter recovered a Rebel fumble at the CCA 29-yard-line. The Cougars marched the distance in 16 plays. Faulk capped off the drive with a two-yard touchdown dive on fourth down. His boot put CCA on top 7-6 with 2:48 left before intermission.
Lowndes countered with an impressive 63-yard, six-play drive that took only 1:41 to take a 14-7 halftime lead.
The third period was all Lowndes as they notched two six pointers to increase their margin to 28-7. The first score was set up by a Cougar fumble at their own 20-yard-line on their first possession of the second half. Lowndes' second tally came at the close of the quarter.
Crenshaw regained some momentum early in the final stanza when Andrew Armour blocked a Rebel punt at the Lowndes 28-yard-line. But on the next play, CCA returned the favor with a fumble.
Lowndes started another drive and moved deep into Cougar territory, but Armour’s fumble recovery at the CCA 21-yard-line stopped the threat.
CCA mounted the game’s final scoring drive from its own 31-yard-line. It took the Cougars 16 plays to reach pay dirt with Faulk doing the honors on a one-yard TD run to make the final 28-13.
Crenshaw will host area opponent Autauga Academy (3-1) at 7 p.m. Friday night.
