For over 100 years baseball has been known as a father/son sport.

For Tommy Bush and his two eldest sons, it’s a family tradition.

Bush, the father of four sons, competed in the fourth annual McKenzie Softball Tournament Saturday with sons Matthew, 16, and Jonathon, 15. He said being on the diamond with them was unique.

&uot;It’s something special watching them,&uot; Tommy said. &uot;I guess like any father I’m happy to watch them.&uot;

Tommy didn’t play baseball in high school, but started playing recreational league softball soon after he graduated.

Although Bush’s team didn’t win the tournament title, he was proud of the team, including his sons, effort.

&uot;They did real well,&uot; Tommy said. &uot;We haven’t played a lot together and I was really surprised we played pretty decent.&uot;

Matthew said he enjoyed having the opportunity to spend more time with his father.

&uot;It’s cool playing with my dad,&uot; Matthew, who played outfield, said. &uot;He’s always at work and we don’t get to see each other that much anymore.&uot;

Matthew said his favorite part of his father’s game is his competitive nature.

&uot;He’s always got to be a winner. It doesn’t matter, he always tries his hardest.&uot;

Jonathon also enjoyed the time spent with his father because he wasn’t pressured on the field.

&uot;I like it because he doesn’t make me do anything I don’t want to do,&uot; Jonathon said. &uot;He keeps me out of trouble.&uot;

Matthew and Jonathon have participated in sports their entire lives.

Matthew be a senior at McKenzie this fall and plays on the football team.

Jonathon will be a sophomore this fall and serves as quarterback on McKenzie’s football team.
