Greenville’s 14-year-old Dixie Boys All-Stars were three outs away from advancing to the state tournament in Clanton, but came up short Friday night.

Enterprise rallied in the seventh inning to score three runs and pull out an 8-6 come-from-behind win over the tournament host. With the win, Enterprise claimed the District 6 championship.

&uot;Everybody played hard and gave 100 percent, but they couldn’t quite pull it out right there at the end,&uot; Head Coach Mike Weston said.

Enterprise led Greenville 5-3 in the fifth inning before Coach Weston’s son, Casey, belted a three-run homer in the sixth scoring Josh Longmire and Blake Mullins to give Greenville a 6-5 lead.

Heading into the final inning, Coach Weston thought things would go his team’s way.

&uot;All we needed was three outs,&uot; Weston said. &uot;And we struck out the first batter. I really thought then it was going to fall into place for us, but it didn’t.&uot;

Weston said Longmire’s play during All-Stars helped keep the team in contention the entire tournament.

&uot;I think he got on base every time he got up to bat,&uot; Weston said. &uot;He really put it on for us. You couldn’t ask for a better leadoff hitter. When he got on it was almost an automatic steal.&uot;

As for Enterprise, Wesson said they were used to tight games and never gave up.

&uot;They never gave up,&uot; he said. &uot;They went 12 innings with Troy. They’re used to fighting and they kept fighting hard.&uot;

Wesson suffered the loss despite striking out 16 batters and giving up only three hits.

Greenville’s Dixie Boys finished All-Stars with a 2-2 record.
