For the fourth time in six years, McKenzie School Principal Randy Williams is searching for a new athletic director and head football coach.

Following an 0-10 record in his only season with the Tigers, Scott Curd resigned as McKenzie’s leading man on the gridiron. Williams said he is searching for stability in the program.

&uot;I’m looking for someone that’s willing to commit to us long term,&uot; he said. &uot;I’m looking for somebody within a three county area, close by that doesn’t have to move their family.&uot;

Williams is also in search of a community-oriented coach.

&uot;I’m looking for someone that can fit our community and our system, connect with the boys and be willing to work hard,&uot; Williams said. &uot;I think there are plenty of coaches out there like that and it’s just a matter of us going through the process and locating one.&uot;

Mark Fedor served as head coach during Williams’ first years as principal at McKenzie before Shane Smothers was hired in 2001. Curd replaced Smothers following a 12-1 record and an appearance in the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Class 1A state quarterfinals.

&uot;The record speaks for itself,&uot; Williams said. &uot;We’ve had some turnover in head coaching. That’s just the nature of the game. That’s the way it is.&uot;

With the turnover McKenzie has endured over the past six years, Williams is optimistic that the right candidate for the job is out there.

&uot;It’s certainly not a good thing for an athletic program when a coach leaves, especially a head coach and athletic director in a small 1A school like McKenzie,&uot; Williams said. &uot;We’re fortunate because I think there’s a good pool of young, energetic coaches within the tri-county area that can step in and get the program back on its feet.&uot;

Williams said Curd resigned for personal and family reasons.

&uot;It was unexpected,&uot; Williams said. &uot;He moved back to north Alabama.&uot;

Williams hopes to have a hiring recommendation ready for the Butler County Board of Education by Monday, which is necessary if he wants a candidate hired at the July 19 board meeting.

&uot;We’re in the interviewing process now,&uot; Williams said. &uot;I expect to make an official recommendation to the school board by Monday. They’re not hired officially until the board hires them.&uot;

During Curd’s year at McKenzie, he also served as the Tigers’ head basketball and softball coach and taught physical education. Williams said the new hire will also teach P.E. and be required to work double duty.

&uot;There will be some other coaching duties other than just football,&uot; Williams said. &uot;We’re too small of a school. There will be other responsibilities.&uot;
