The descendants of the late Mr. and Mrs. Griffin Mathews (Malindia Mayo) held their family reunion on Sunday 13, 2004 at the Vidette Community Center.

This annual affair has been held since 1962 at the Vidette Community Center. The parents of this family came to Alabama from Americus, Ga., in 1851 and settled near Troy in Pike County. In 1867 they moved to Crenshaw County, where Vidette Community now stands on the Luverne-Troy highway.

The activities of the day included fellowship, a delicious covered dish luncheon and the sharing of old family photographs. The following relatives and friends were present. Ms. Dorothy Cleo Stephens of Meadow-crest Community was honored on her 82nd. birthday on June 11. Ms. Stephens daughter, Doris Haag of Mont-gomery, hosted this birthday celebration in her mother’s apartment on Meadow-crest drive. The guest list was composed of all her neighbors who came at 3 p.m. to help Ms. Cleo celebrate. Her Pastor, the Rev. and Mrs. Perkins of Rutledge Methodist Church and a close friend, Mr. Mancil Fowler, also attended. Everyone sang happy birthday to the honoree, then a decorated birthday cake. Ice cream, nuts and punch were served by the hostess. Ms. Cleo received several useful gifts.

The Women’s Ministry of South Luverne met for their quarterly fellowship on Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m. in the choir room at the church. Debra Moseley, director of S.L.B.C. Women’s Ministry opened the meeting with prayer. Then she spoke briefly on several exciting events that are planned for the future. After the announcements she introduced Missy Folmar, who shared her personal testimony.

South Luverne Baptist Church Vacation Bible School for 2004 will be held at S.L.B.C. on July 12-26 beginning each night at 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. All ages are encouraged to attend.

Classes will be kindergarten to adults. The theme for Bible School will be &uot;Its Far-Out-Its Far-East, Rickshaw Rally-Racing to the SON.&uot; Advanced registration will be held on Saturday July 10 at 10 a.m. followed by fun and games and a hot-dog lunch. Pastor Mike Green and congregation extends to all a warm South Luverne welcome.

This Week….

There is no limit to the good a man can do if he doesn’t care who gets the credit. If you can’t be a highway, then be a trail; If you can’t be the sun be a star; It isn’t by size that you win or fail: Be the best of whatever you are.

The Luverne High Classes of 1949 and 1950 met June 19 for a reunion.

The group gathered at 11 a.m. at the Crenshaw Recreation Club for a re-acquaintance time.

After a delicious lunch the group continued to reminisce about a sweeter, gentle time in their lives-their school days.

In the afternoon some visited in the homes of Betty Speed and Gladys and Charles Sport. Others enjoyed a game of golf while others used the time to visit friends and relatives in the area.

The group gathered again in the evening for a delicious buffet dinner including a bountiful display of deserts provided by the locals.

After dinner the group engaged in a &uot;remember when&uot; activity and many related positive experiences with teachers such as Mrs. Lillian Cox, Miss Marjorie Mahone, Miss Martin, Mrs. Watson, Mrs. Madie Horn, Mrs. Alene Segrest and principals Mr. Harlin and Mr. Watson and others.

Also during the &uot;remember when time&uot;, secrets were revealed such as skipping school, borrowing homework, being paddled, spending time in the cloak room for mis-behaving and tales of budding romances that withered and died. However, it was agreed by all that their school days at LHS were great day’s with great teachers, parents and a great community.

Betty Speed said, &uot;We were so very fortunate to have been exposed to good caring teachers who expected and demanded our best, and to have parents who supported them. Yes, it was a sweeter, gentler time when life was simple, but it was also 12 years that positively affected each of us and helped mold us into the people we are today and for that we are so very grateful.&uot;

Jim Mitchell said, &uot; There have been times in my life when I felt I was too busy and too tired or too uninterested to go vote and when this happened a picture of Mrs. Cox would flash before me and I could hear her say, &uot;If you don’t go vote, you’re not worth a copper. . . I always vote.&uot;

Jim’s comment brought a round of applause as well as unanimous agreement.

After a moment of silence in remembrance of deceased members the class members went their separate ways with a renewed determination to meet again soon.
