The laughter of little girls sporting pigtails could be heard among the chatter of mommies and daddies Monday evening at the Greenville Softball Complex.

The little softball stars were on hand for Greenville Parks and Recreation's Opening Day ceremonies for its Cupcake League.

Gathered with the young girls' parents were the players' brothers and sisters and don't forget the grandparents as the two cupcake teams, the Rockets and the Go Getters, put the icing on the festivities with their first of 10 games this season.

Every player in the twonteam league came away a winner as the opener resulted in a 7n7 tie.

"Everything was lovely," Greenville Parks and Recreation Director Jerome Harris said. "The teams are pretty equal this year and the score was an indication of that. The coaches are doing a great job and it looks like Greenville has a bright future with this 7n8nyearnold group of girls. I wish we had more teams because there are a lot more girls out there that needed to signup."

Hannah Burnette led the Rockets with three singles, three RBI and scored two runs. Janessa Hawkins also drove in three runs on two hits. Amber Harris finished with two singles, an RBI and a run scored.

Also contributing for the Rockets were, Brittany Nolan who finished with two singles and two runs, Kristen Welch and Kaisey Taylor each finished with a single and run scored and Lexus Jenkins chipped in with a single.

For the Go Getters, Kennedy Boutwell led with two singles and two RBI and Tydrika McDole slapped a twonrun single. Shelby Mayes, Rebecca Dicks and Logan Harrell added a single and an RBI each.

Kenyatta Peterson finished with two singles and Kristen Jordan added a single.
