Jaycees seek top citizen nominees

The Greenville Jaycees are currently seeking nominations for the 2004 John D. Murphy Citizen of the Year Award.

The award is given to an individual that has shown dedication and service to the community of Greenville.

Although, the Citizen of the Year Award is a longstanding tradition for the Jaycees, it was named for John D. Murphy who was an industrial leader in the Camellia City and was renowned for his participation in various civic and charitable organizations.

His widow, Greenville City Councilwoman Susan Murphy, actively participates in many of the Jaycees’ various projects.

Those wishing to send in a nomination are asked to adhere to guidelines.

Nominees must:

n be a resident of Greenville School District.

n have made a contribution for the betterment of the community over a sustained period.

n show commitment and contributions through church, social, business, school, chamber or other community related endeavors.

n be a role model reflecting strong character and ideals.

Once nominations are complete, they will go before the Jaycees membership for a vote.

Past winners will also have a vote on the new winner.

The Citizen of the Year Award is one of the Jaycees oldest annual events and was named for Murphy after his death.

This year’s winner will be announced at the Main Street Summer Social that will be announced at a later date.

The Jaycees ask that all nominations be mailed to the Greenville Jaycees, John D. Murphy Citizen of the Year 2002 Award, P.O. Box 171, Greenville, AL 36037 or email them to greenvillejaycees@hotmail.com.

Nominations must be received no later than April 10, 2003.
