In the next few weeks, the Butler County Board of Education must decide to eliminate the JROTC program from the system.

We do not believe this would be a prudent move for the board.

It is no secret that the kids who participate the program are disciplined individuals.

They take ROTC as an elective, but they learn so much more inside that one class.

They learn the importance of leadership, history and gain a sense of belonging.

Many of our graduates who took part in ROTC have gone on to very successful military careers.

Our schools are known for many things such as good

academics, strong athletic programs and much more.

Cadets from the ROTC program are quite visible in the community.

The Color Guard takes part in most of the sporting events and parades and usually, wherever they are asked to be.

You want to see determination and loyalty?

Think about it this way, these kids aren't required to give up their free time, but do it willingly.

A good example of this was the recent Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Breakfast.

There were numerous ROTC cadets working very hard on a school holiday in the early morning hours, determined to do the right thing.

So we encourage those who support the program to attend the future BOE meetings and be silent sentries for these young people.

Those who are ROTC alumni should also be there.

We encourage the school board to find the funding for this program and keep it a viable part of our schools.

In the years to come, we can promise, that when it looked the darkest for the program, these kids will remember that you stood with them.

The board will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 19.
