The Fort Dale Players production of Arsenic and Old Lace will likely not be what many expect in a high school production.

The play, written by Joseph Kesselring, is a form of dark comedy that promises to be humorous as well as entertaining.

The main storyline revolves around elderly sisters Abbie and Martha Brewster who murder old men in order to help them find peace.

Assistant director Ronda Ricks felt the story would be a unique and fun way for the students to polish their dramatic skills.

&uot;This play has always been one of my favorites,&uot; said Ricks. &uot;When we were given the chance to do a play this year I felt that this would be fun for the kids.&uot;

Though the play may sound a bit morbid, Ricks maintained that it was all comedy.

&uot;I know that it sounds gruesome,&uot; said Ricks. &uot;But it is truly a lighthearted play.&uot;

Senior Jessica Hyatt, plays Abbie and Junior Madison Norrell will portray Martha in the leading roles.

Hyatt affirmed that though the plot may sound odd, it is truly comedic.

&uot;It is a different kind of play,&uot; said Hyatt. &uot;But it is fun and I think that people will enjoy it.&uot;

Adding to the comic relief will be Daniel Paulk, who will play the role of Teddy Brewster. Paulk, whose character believes he is Theodore Roosevelt, will often be seen charging up stairs, which appear to be San Juan Hill in his mind.

Though this is Paulk’s first role he has adjusted quickly and enjoyed the new experience.

&uot;It was different because I had never been in a play before,&uot; said Paulk. &uot;But everyone has made it lots of fun.&uot;

Among others putting a tireless effort to make the play work are play director and English teacher Nonie Taylor.

&uot;She has been a huge help,&uot; said Ricks. &uot;I don’t know how we could have done it without her.&uot;

The play, which has a cast of 14 students from grades seven to twelve, will open at the Ritz Theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29.

Additional showtimes will be at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31 and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 1.
