Shaping up for the new year

For many people, the New Year brings about the resolution to lose weight and shapen up, and the YMCA of Greenville wants to help.

According to Center Director Amanda Phillips, the registration fee is currently being waived, which is a savings of $50.

Also, if you are already a member and bring in a new member, Phillips said the existing member gets a great YMCA T-shirt.

There are other special promotions they plan to run throughout the month of January.

Also, they are changing the number of aerobics classes they offer.

&uot;Where we have offered seven classes each week, we now will offer 10,&uot; Phillips said.

&uot;We have also extended our Child Watch service and there is currently no fee for this service.&uot;

For those who want to join the YMCA for the fitness program, but have no idea where to start, they do have a personal trainer who can help.

&uot;Diane Katzev is a certified personal trainer through the national YMCA,&uot; Phillips said.

&uot;Each new members gets an orientation appointment with Diane which she uses to tell them about each machine and how it works.&uot;

Phillips said Katzev also takes on clients for personal training, but she arranges those fees.

&uot;If you want to work on your abs, you can come in and Diane will set you up with a program to work on those and what machines work best,&uot; she said.

For those wishing to join who might have some health problems, Phillips said a personal physician must first give clearance to use the fitness center.

This is a safety precaution.

Helena Shirley will teach aerobics, toning and stretching on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. until 9 a.m.

Lisa Nimmer will teach full blaster aerobics from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday.

She follows that class with a body sculpting class from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Dusty Brogden teaches an aerobics class from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Chrissy Fox does power stretching and from 5:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays, and also does a cardio/sculpting class the same night from 6 to 7 p.m.
