Look around town and country and you’ll see homes and businesses sporting yellow ribbons—poignant reminders of the many local citizen soldiers currently serving overseas.

Their safe and speedy return from the Middle East is anxiously hoped and prayed by family and friends. These are ordinary people who have willingly taken on an extraordinary—and dangerous—task.

It’s another chapter in a long history of dedicated service given to the nation by Butler County citizens.

Nearly 60 years have passed since many of this county’s native sons served in World War II. All too many never came home, paying the ultimate sacrifice with their lives. Others returned with serious damage done to the body and spirit. Many found it difficult to talk about their experiences in World War II and few, if any, wanted to be considered heroes.

Like the young military men and women of today, they were simply serving the country they loved. Our WW II veterans deserve to be remembered and recognized with a permanent county-wide monument.

The Greenville Lions Club is currently raising funds to create such a memorial, one that will honor all Butler County World War II veterans.

Please stop by the Wal-Mart and Super Foods parking lots this morning between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. and drop some spare dollars in the buckets of Lions members.
