Reservoir probe getsadditional funding

The Greenville City Council announced that the consulting company Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood have found an additional grant to expand their engineering services for the water impoundment study the city retained the company to perform. The study is being conducted to find a site for a possible water reservoir that may be necessary in the future to address our expanding city’s water needs.

&uot;GMC was able to find additional funds to conduct dirt sample surveys that were not included in our original contract with them,&uot; Mayor Dexter McLendon said. &uot;We need to approve an engineering services contract to include that.&uot;

The council approved the resolution for the contract.

The council also approved a resolution to award the airport perimeter fencing contract to Columbus Fencing Co., of Columbus, Miss. The company submitted the lowest bid.

&uot;Because the bid was lower than we expected,&uot; McLendon said. &uot;We will be able to fence more than we originally planned to. But we have to submit this bid now to get the Federal Aviation Administration’s approval to go ahead with the project.

Bids were received in the city council’s chambers at 2 p.m., Monday.

Other council business was:

NResolution 2003-53 – approved recommendation to modify inert landfill Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) permit No. 07-05 and approved submittal of application to ADEM.

The new permit will increase the landfill’s daily intake from 10 tons per day volume to 200 tons per day. The permit modification also includes an acreage increase from 13.23 acres to 30 acres, allowing for any future expansion

of the landfill.

NResolution 2003-55 – approved resolution to authorize acceptance of grant funding through the Alabama Industrial Access Road and Bridge Corporation for project IAR-007-000-002, and authorized the mayor to enter into an agreement on behalf of the city with the State of Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) for prelininary engineering, right-of-way acquisition and construction for Hwashin America industrial access roadways and improvements on Highway 31 North, and approved city funding to be budgeted for any construction costs exceeding the $1, 271,300 grant.

NResolution 2003-56 – approved resolution same as above for Hyundai Hysco site, with approval of city funds to be budgeted for any construction costs exceeding the $1,705,000 grant.

NResolution 2003-57 – authorized mayor to enter into an engineering services contract in the amount of $130,000 with Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood for the Interstate 65 frontage road.

NResolution 2003-58 – approved a change order No. 2 for the partial parallel taxiway project at the airport, giving the company a 10-day bad weather extension to complete the project.

NResolution 2003-59 – authorized the renewal of the Boan Dirt Pit contract. The city is currently buying dirt from the pit at $.75 per yard.

NResolution 2003- 60 – authorized a street light modification agreement with Alabama Power Company for lighting upgrades to street lights from the Greenville Glass Company to Majors Cleaners.

NApproved an application for a five percent ALDOT grant to pay a portion of the city’s airport fencing costs.

The city also approved the payment of these expenditures:

N$1,715 to ADAPCO for a 55-gallon drum of malathion for the city’s mosquito control program.

N$1,540.43 to Alabama Amateur Softball Association for AASA District 6 tournament team registrations, fees and official softballs.

The city council also proclaimed August 1-7, National Clown Week.

The council will open bids for the Methodist Hill Sanitary Sewer Improvements for CDBG LR-CM-RR-02-014.

The next council meeting will be August 11 at 5:30 p.m.
