Greenville Animal Shelter officials announced the shelter’s new hours during a live broadcast on WQZX last Saturday.

The new hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

&uot;We hope that the new hours will facilitate adoptions better,&uot; shelter assistant manager Kandys Killough said. &uot;More people are going to be out and have more time on Saturdays, and the kids are out of school, so we thought Saturdays would be a good time to be open.

Killough said that they haven’t added staff for the new hours, they simply rearranged their present hours (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.).

Butler County Humane Society President Angie Wagoner said the Humane Society was excited about the new hours and hoped it would increase the adoption rate.

&uot;As always, we are looking for volunteers,&uot; Wagoner said. &uot;We are hoping the new hours will make more people available to volunteer to work. People who have jobs now come out on Saturdays to help us out. We will really need volunteers for the Saturday hours.&uot;

Volunteers have to be at least 14 years old. Those 14 to 17 years old have to have a parental permission form signed. The shelter offers an orientation session to new volunteers.

Another announcement from the animal shelter principals is that Carolyn Flowers will take over as assistant manager.

&uot;I will be going to work full-time at my business – the Pet Laundry,&uot; Killough said. &uot;I have really enjoyed working at the shelter and hate to leave, but I have every confidence that Carolyn will do a great job.&uot;

Wagoner said that the Humane Society also is still recruiting new members and donations.

&uot;We always need money,&uot; Wagoner said. &uot;If anyone would like to join the society, please fill out our membership card and mail it to the Butler County Humane Society, 309 S. Park St., Greenville, AL 36037.&uot;

The society members are currently trying to raise money to build a covered area for the dog kennels located at the rear of the shelter.

&uot;During cold or inclement weather, we have some shelter for the dogs housed there, but it really isn’t enough,&uot; Society Member Ann Daughtry said. &uot;We would like to have an adequate cover built back there. We hope we will be able to do that soon.&uot;
