Dr. Fred Winkler, the administrator of the Winkler-Troy Scholarship, is pleased to announce that the scholarship board has selected Laura Ashley McQueen as the recipient of this year’s award. The alternate is Jessica Butts.

The scholarship is awarded each year to a Greenville High School graduate that plans to attend Lurleen B. Wallace Junior College, either at the Greenville or Andalusia branch, and is used to pay towards the student’s tuition and book costs.

&uot;The scholarship can be used for two years by the winning student if they reapply. To get it the second year they need to show they have made progress and have a good scholarly ethic,&uot; Winkler said. &uot;We don’t base it strictly on grades. They have to show us they are taking their studies seriously.&uot;

Ashley said she was very happy when she found out she’d been selected.

&uot;I was speechless,&uot; she said. &uot;It was really unexpected.&uot;

She plans to work towards a degree in the science or medical field.

The scholarship board members are Winkler, who retired from LBW, Roberta Gamble, a retired GHS teacher and Pat McNaughton, current GHS guidance counselor.

The scholarship has been given for the past 13 years, and this is the ninth award. The first scholarship went to Tracy Scott in 1991.

&uot;The scholarship was begun in honor of August and Ida Winkler by their granddaugter Elsie Troy,&uot; Winkler said.

&uot;The goal of the award is to encourage and enable a GHS graduate to continue their education. We hope that, in receiving the scholarship, the recipients will develop pride in themselves and Butler County.&uot;

Ashley is the daughter of April McQueen of Greenville.
