The Greenville City Council welcomed Susan Murphy as its newest member Monday night at the council’s regular meeting.

Murphy was appointed to outgoing councilman Gale Slagley’s spot on the city’s ruling body and will complete the approximately two years remaining on his term.

Slagley resigned February 6 after moving out of District One.

Circuit Court Judge Ed McFerrin gave the oath of office to Murphy during the meeting.

Mayor Dexter McLendon welcomed Murphy to the council, citing her skills in fundraising as one of the assets she brings to the council.

&uot;Susan has been involved in many projects for years,&uot; McLendon said. &uot;If you wanted to raise money or get somebody to help you with that, she always was the one who would do it. The reason I recommended Susan was her love of Greenville and the passion for our city that she has. I want people around me who have the same love and passion that I do.

A native Montgomerian, Murphy has been a resident of Greenville since 1976.

&uot;I am honored to be appointed to this position,&uot; Murphy said. &uot;I love Greenville; my mother, Leola Kennedy Samford, was born and raised in Greenville, so it has always been a special part of my life.&uot;

Murphy has been involved with several area organizations, such as the Civitan Club, Kiwanis Club, Greenville Area Arts Council, United Fund and Department of Human Resources Quality Assurance Team, during her 27 years living in Greenville.

She also helps sponsor the Foster Parents Banquet every year, which honors local parents who have taken in foster children.

A reception in honor of the two recent council additions followed the swearing-in ceremony.

&uot;We are here to honor not only Susan Murphy, who is taking over for Gale Slagley in District One, but also Ed Sims, who was appointed last month to fill Judge Steve Norman’s seat,&uot; Mayor Dexter McLendon said. &uot;We are very excited about the opportunities for Ed and Susan, and look forward to working with them. I feel this is going to be a good year for Greenville. A lot of good things are about to happen.&uot;
