Panthers fall in final minutes

The Panthers hosted the Flomaton Hurricanes Friday night but did not claim victory over them as Flomaton won 27-24.

Flomaton wasted no time in the first quarter as a Desjhaun Walker broke a 66-yard run for the end zone with barely 28 seconds off the clock. The extra point failed, and Flomaton was up by six.

Alphonso Wesley scored again for the Hurricanes as the first quarter ended by recovering a Panther fumble and running it in 45 yards for a touchdown. Going for two points, the Canes converted and the score stood 14-0.

Georgiana struck back as the clock read 9:34 in the half on a five-yard run. The extra-point kick failed and the scored was 14-6, Flomaton.

Georgiana attempted to tie the game going into the locker room as quarterback Cornelius Bellamy completed a 15-yard pass to Andrew Rudolph in the end zone for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed and the Panthers were down by two.

On the kickoff, however, the Hurricanes fumbled the ball on their 20-yard line and LaKendrick Williams recovered the ball and returned it for a touchdown.

Again the extra point conversion failed, but the half ended 14-18, Panthers.

Flomaton was the first to score in the second half when quarterback C.J. Williams completed a 22-yard pass to Leonte Johnson for a touchdown. After a penalty pushed the PAT back, the Hurricanes failed a two-point conversion. With 19 seconds left in the third quarter, Flomaton led the Panthers, 20-18.

Georgiana struck back with 5:17 left in the game as Tony Johnson capped off a drive with a 15-yard run for seven points. The two-point conversion failed, but the Panthers led 24-20.

The final score of the night came from Flomaton as the Hurricanes' Brian Wesley charged from the 14-yard line in to the end zone with barely 2:57 left in the game. The PAT kick was successful and Georgiana was down by three. The clock ran out as Georgiana threw a long pass from midfield to the end zone, which was intercepted on the 10-yard line.

This area game was Georgiana's first loss of the year. They now stand 1-1 and will play at McIntosh next week. Flomaton remains undefeated.
