Superintendent of the Butler County School System recognized several area faculty members and students at the Butler County Board of Education meeting Thursday night.

For faculty, Reed announced that Louise Foster and Katrina Smith of the Business Education Department at Greenville High School, and Chris Caldwell of the Technology Program at Georgiana High School all passed the Business Industry Certification. In addition, Betty Whittle of W.O. Parmer Elementary School received a Golden Apple award from WAKA, and attended the banquet in early May.

Reed also announced that Georgiana High School Assistant Principal Harrison Mills was the first African-American to be inducted into the Baldwin County Athletic Hall of Fame.

Mills, who has been an assistant principal at Georgiana for five years, will be retiring this year.

Reed also recognized Georgiana High School sixth grade student Chris Johnson as the winner of the Butler County Spelling Bee, and the sixth grade Math Team at Georgiana placed first in the county math tournament. He added that sixth graders Zebbie Mitchell, Andy Campbell and Nicholas Bailey, placed first, second and third respectively at the tournament.

In the area of scholarships, the superintendent recognized Rickie Sallie Jr. for receiving the annual Achiever Award from the Greenville Chamber of Commerce and the Greenville YMCA and for a football scholarship to the University of West Alabama. Courtney Johnson of Georgiana High School also was recognized as being the recipient of the Challenge of Excellence Award from the Greenville Exchange Club.

&uot;All of these activities are culminated at the end of the year, and all of our teachers and students show the quality staff, students and schools that we are producing here in Butler County,&uot; said Reed.

The board accepted the resignations of Jai Hill as head basketball coach of Greenville High School, James Rutherford as teacher and coach of Georgiana High School and Rico White, physical education teacher and head football coach of Georgiana High School.

The board also approved the request for permission to notify Sgt. Michael Barr of the intent to cancel his ROTC employment contract. The cancellation is due to a reduction in the program.

Summer school also was on the agenda, and the board announced that classes will be held at R.L. Austin Elementary, W.O. Parmer Elementary, Greenville Elementary, Greenville Middle and Greenville High schools. Students attending Georgiana High and McKenzie High will not have summer school offered to them at either of those locations, but can register for classes in Greenville.

The board also:

granted a change in the effective date of Greenville High School Principal John Black;

granted permission for renewal of the superintendent’s bond;

granted permission to particpate in a summer job description consortium and board policy consortium;

granted permission for the advertising of bids for the child nutrition program equipment;

approved the painting contract of Steve Buskey Jr.

The next meeting of the Butler County Board of Education will be held Thursday, June 20.
