According to the Alabama State Trooper's Office, at approximately 5:46 p.m. on New Year's Eve, a couple was killed in a one-car accident on I-65 southbound at the rest area near mile marker 133.

Van Hao Truong, 53, of Ontario, Canada, was traveling south on I-65 and lost control of his 1994 Toyota Camry as he attempted to turn off of the interstate into the rest area, according to officials. The Camry then crashed, killing both Truong and his wife, Mythi Enguyan, 47.

Butler County deputies and Greenville police responded to the accident and worked the wreck until state troopers arrived.

According to the Alabama State Troopers office, the number of vehicle accident fatalities recorded this Christmas holiday was 16 while the number of fatalities recorded during the New Year holiday was 11. Last year, the number of Christmas holiday fatalities was six and the New Year holiday number was seven.

These numbers only reflect accidents worked by county and state officials and does not include accidents only worked by city officials.
