Gymnastics group fares well in Montgomery meet

Competing in three of six sessions, the Greenville Gymnastics group made an excellent showing among 300 competitors at the 2001 Blue-Gray Gymnastics Invitational Meet held Oct. 5 through Oct. 7.

Armory Gymnastics of Montgomery was the site of the meet, with over 300 gymnasts representing 21 gyms.

"I was extremely proud of our girls n they showed great talent and performance under pressure, and in front of a very large crowd," said Terre Matthews, owner/instructor of Greenville Gymnastics on South College Street.

Level six gymnasts Andrea Sport and Kelsie Moody competed in the Friday afternoon session.

"Kelsie, competing in the eleven-year-old age group placed eighth on the floor exercises with a score of 8.125 n Andrea, in the 12-year-old group placed second

on the vault with a score of 9.0 and tenth on the balance beam with a score of 8.35," Matthews said.

Level four competitors met on Saturday during the morning session, including Greenville Gymnastics' Rebecca Foster.

"Becca, competing in the 10-year-old group, placed second on bars with a score of 8.65, first on the balance beam with a score of 8.9 and second all-around with a score of 34.8," she said. "And then in the last session of the weekend on Sunday, Greenville Gym's two level five gymnasts, Elizabeth McCauley and Suzanne Smyth competed.

"Elizabeth, competing in the 11-year-old age group placed seventh on the bars with a score of 8.925 and seventh on the balance beam with a score of 8.4," Matthews said.

"Suzanne, competing in the 12 and 13-year-old group, placed fourth on the vault with a score of 8.55, third on the uneven bars with a 9.175, second on the balance beam with an 8.5, second on the floor exercise with a score of 8.35 and second in the all-around category with a total score of 34.575," she said. "Our next meet will be in Clanton on Oct. 20 for the CCY Invitational Meet."
