Although Bandit Laura Skipper notched an RBI and eventually scored a run following a triple in the first inning, the hosting Vipers persevered, holding them back from any more scoring.

The Vipers came alive in the third inning, with runs scored by Kristen Mullins, Tiffany Lynch, Laura Jones and Jessica Thomas.

Holding the Bandits from future scoring during the game, the Vipers made their fifth run when Nikki White scored the fifth and final run of the game following a double.

White scored on an RBI from the base hit of Laura Jones.

Cobras 9, Rippers 1

Early in the bottom of the first inning Friday night, Danielle Mitchell and Amy Tadlock

notched runs after the visiting Rippers had been struck-out in their first three at-bats.

A homerun in the second inning by Tadlock brought Mitchell in again, followed by a run scored by Mikki Harris.

Then in the third inning, Mitchell, Tadlock, Daie Johnson and Sophia Mobley each scored a run, to bring the tally to nine points for the Cobras.

Danita Crenshaw scored the only run of the night for the Rippers in the second inning, with Ardith Washington getting credit for the RBI with a single.

Dixie Youth Division awards to be presented

Inclement weather on Friday night prevented the Dixie Youth awards and closing ceremony from taking place, so Greenville Parks and Recreation has chosen to announce the winners in the newspaper.

Note: All the listed winners should come to the Parks and Recreation office at Beeland Park to receive their trophies.

Most Valuable Players (MVP) for the 2001 Dixie Youth are Blake Mullins for the A's, Dalton Gregory for the Astros, Caleb Blackburn for the Dodgers and Joshua Longmire for the Orioles.

Recipients of this year's Sportsmanship Awards are Bobby Martin for the A's, Quinton Grayson for the Astros, Hayden Duke for the Braves, Mika Jones for the Dodgers and Hunter Paul for the Orioles.

Although no MVP was selected for the Braves, Coach Steve Newton offered an explanation.

&uot;The team played a long, hard season this year,&uot; Newton said. &uot;I felt like they all were MVPs.&uot;

Midget Girls All-stars announced

Greenville Parks and Recreation announced the 2001 Midget Girls division All-stars during the closing ceremony on Friday night.

Two teams were selected, one for girls 10-years-old and under, and one for 12-years-old and under.

The 2001 All-star lineup for the Midgets 10-and-under are Heather Blackmon, Jennifer Blackmon, Kayla Johnson, Angela Luckie, Shawnee Morrison, Kairee Michelle Newton, Nicole Norton, Shantzel Peagler, Casey Rodgers, Roasemary Russell, Amy Skipper and Jasmine Truitt.

The coaching staff, headed by Ray Johnson, includes Jarrod Newton and MacDonald Russell.

The 10-and-under begins play June 29, in Andalusia.

All-stars for the 12-and-under team, under the direction of the coaching staff of Ben Miller, Karen Owens and James Tillery are: Halie Burnette, Shelly Burt, Carrie Coker, Kayla Garlock, Kristi Garlock, Chelsea Hulick, Michele Hulick, Kanitra Lewis, Abbey Mullins, Caroline Waite, Frances Watts and Brittany White.

The first game for the 12-and-under girls is scheduled of July 5, to be played in Greenville.

Dixie Youth All-stars selected

Although the rain dampened attempts at a closing ceremony on Friday night at Day Memorial Park, the All-star lineup was released following the last game.

This year's team, headed by coaches Fred Johnson, Steve "Spanky" Croley and Steve Newton, will begin practicing their newly selected team starting on Friday.

The 2001 Greenville Dixie Youth All-stars are Caleb Blackburn, Blake Conway, Stephen Croley, Cory Johnson, Rico Johnson, Lynn Lewis, Joshua Longmire, Blake Mullins, Tyler Newton, Hunter Paul, Zach Smith, Stephen Tilley and Davis Watts.

Dixie Softball Midget Girls Division awards presented

Following the final game of the regular season on Friday night, the Dixie Softball Midget Girls were presented trophies during closing ceremonies.

2001 Most Valuable Players (MVPs) for the league are Halie Burnette for Bad News, Ann Caroline Waite for The Intimidators, Brittany Leigh White for the Rockets and Kanitra Lewis for Undefeated.

Recipients of the 2001 Sportsmanship Award are Brooke Wilson for Bad News, Reneasha Gardner for the Intimidators, Carrie Leigh Coker for the Rockets, and Frances Watts for Undefeated.
