The second annual Butler County turkey-calling contest, sanctioned by the Butler County chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation has been scheduled for Feb. 9, 2001.

NWTF, in cooperation with the Youth Ministries of the Georgiana First Baptist Church and Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church has arranged for World Champion turkey-caller Eddie Salter to serve as the master-of-ceremonies for the event, which will take place at the Georgiana High School auditorium starting at 5:30 p.m.

"This is the main fund-raiser for our youth groups, so they can raise money to go to summer camp," said Michael Bass, program coordinator.

Bass said that there would be several categories to the competition.

"The doors will be open at 5:30 p.m., with the junior division competition beginning at 6:30," Bass said. "There will also be open-calling, hunter, owling and friction contests."

"With over 35 years of experience, Eddie Salter is currently recognized as one of the country's leading authorities on turkey calling and deer hunting," Bass said. "He started hunting when he was eight-years-old, near his home in Evergreen. Learning techniques from his father and grandfather, Eddie called in and harvested his first gobbler at the age of 10."

Bass said that the entry fees are $20 for the open category, and $10 for the hunter, junior, owling and friction categories.

"People can either enter in advance, or at the door on the day of the contests," said Bass. "Food and beverages will be available on-site, and there will be plaques and cash prizes for the division winners."

Bass said there would also be door prizes.

"We will have raffles for several prizes, including a Mossberg 3-inch magnum shotgun," he said.
