The Greenville Tiger baseball team

began their 2000 campaign with a decisive 10-0 win over the Georgiana Panthers as GHS' William Clark pitched a one-hitter.

The senior struck out eight Panthers in five innings of work.

Clark didn't allow any walks in the win.

"William pitched a great game and had a good day behind the plate as well," coah John Williamson said.

Besides pitching, Clark scored two RBIs as he walked and had a sacrifice fly. In addition, George Nick Autrey and William Phillips each went one for two at the plate.

Autrey, the senior shortstop, hit a double and recorded his first RBI of the season.

Greenville scored two of their 10 runs in the second inning and added three more in the third for a 5-0 advantage.

After being silent for the next two innings, GHS scored five in the bottom of the fifth for the 10-0 win.

"It was a good win to open the season with but we need to look ahead to the next game," Williamson said.

Georgiana committed three costly errors in the game that allowed Greenville to score runs. Also, several walks by the Panther pitching staff helped the Tigers score even more throughout the day.

After their three and out first inning to the start the season, GHS eventually loaded the bases on a couple of occasions. In the fifth with the bases jam packed, senior catcher Tony Norris was hit by a pitch and the first of five runs crossed home plate.

After an error by the Panther's shortstop and the sacrifice fly by Williams, the Tigers had a commanding 8-0 lead.

The game was called when two more runs came in for the GHS win.

"We were patient at the plate and played as a team," the coach said.

The Tigers patience proved to help in the win as several walked players rounded the bases through the course of an inning to score.

The Tigers will play on Tuesday, Feb. 29, at Red Level. The game will start at 3:30 p.m.
