Greenville Academy wrestling team tunes up for state; host home meet

The Greenville Academy wrestling team found success last Thursday night as they hosted their second meet of the season.

The tri-meet, which consisted of the Tornados, Edgewood and Meadowview Christian Academies, started at 6 p.m. on Jan. 20.

The tri-meet was the last meet of the season before the state tournament on Jan. 29 at Macon-East in Montgomery.

In the meet, the Tornados defeated Meadowview's team

42-36 before the home crowd.

Edgewood beat GA 60-24.

With the regular season done,

GA recorded a 5-5 team mark.

GA wrestling head coach Jeffrey Atkins said he is proud of the team.

"I am very proud of each member of this team and the progress they have made this year," Atkins said.

In the matches, the crowd watched two of the three state ranked Tornados take care of their business on the wrestling mat.

Todd Mock, ranked second in the state with a 14-2 record, defeated Meadowview's Lovelady and won by forfeit against Edgewood in the 187-pound division.

James Turner, ranked second as well with a 15-2 record, pinned his competition in the 169-pound division. He defeated Edgewood's Shaw and Meadowview's Vallaire.

Josh Williams is the third Tornado that is ranked in the state. As he gears up for state, Williams has a 10-1 record.

In other action, Andrew Allen Godwin and Dustin McNeil went 2-0 in the home tri-meet.

Godwin scored wins in the 82-pound division. McNeil defeated Edgewood's Inabinet and Meadowview's Reed last Thursday night in the 140-pound weight class.

Other winners were Kyle Foster, Justin Sexton and Jason Duncan.

Foster upended Meadowview's Barlow in the 75-pound weight class while Sexton and Duncan won by forfeit.

"The young team has a lot of work to do to get ready for the state AISA Wrestling Tournament this Saturday at Macon-East," the coach said.

In the heavyweight class, GA's James Graham lost to Meadowview's Seavers and Edgewood's Rainwater.

Blake Conway, classed in the 157-pound weight class, also lost both of his matches.

GA's Bill Conway (134-pound weight division) and James McGough (147-pound weight class) also fell to both Edgewood and Meadowview opponents.

Atkins said he has enjoyed the season so far and that he anticipates seeing how the team does at the state tournament.
