The Fort Dale Academy boys' and girls' basketball teams both won last Tuesday night against Monroe Academy in Greenville.

The girls' team went to 3-1 on the season with a convincing 69-33 win while the boys' team outlasted the Volunteers in overtime by the score of 78-68.

FDA varsity coach Reggie Mantooth said both teams played well.

"Both teams responded well in the game and came up winners," Mantooth said.

The boys came back from a 13 point halftime deficit to earn the win.

"Marshall Watts (senior forward) had a great game with 29 points and twenty rebounds," he said.

Watts led all scorers while recording two blocked shots, four steals, and two assists.

He downed 12 of 15 free throws shots in the game while shooting 50 percent from the three point line with a three for six effort.

Junior point guard Adam Crenshaw scored 16 points while dishing out four assists against the Volunteers.

Senior forward Charles Mitchell added 11 points and 11 rebounds while senior forward Mal Winters pulled down 12 rebounds to go with his seven points.

In the game, the Volunteers took an early 16-11 lead at the end of the first periodas before taking a 36-23 lead at

halftime.

In the third period, the eagles outscored the Vols 27 to 13 en route to a 64 to 64 score at the end of regulation. In overtime, the Eagles distanced themselves from MA by outscoring the Vols 14 to 4 for the dramatic win.

"Monroe is a good team. Our defense and rebounding were the keys to our comeback in the second half," Mantooth said.

The girls jumped out to a huge lead by halftime in their game. The Eagles outscored the Vols 41-15 in the first two periods.

"The girls controlled the game from the start," he said.

In the game, 10 players from FDA scored while everyone had a chance to play.

"We were able to get a big lead and play a lot of people," Mantooth said.

Senior guard Jami Barlow led the team with 17 points and eight rebounds while senior forward Abbie Gardner scored 16 points. Gardner also had seven rebounds and two steals.

Senior guard Melissa Gilbert hit four of nine three pointers and scored 14 points. Gilbert also had six assists and three steals.

"We need to continue to work on our rebounding and our defensive pressure," Mantooth said.

The Eagles will travel to Monroeville to play Monroe starting at 4 p.m. on Dec. 7.
