The Greenville High Tigers girls' varsity team were handed a 62-32 loss to Calhoun in their season opener in Calhoun last Saturday night.

GHS varsity girls' coach Jerome Antone said the combination of missed free throws, missed layups and miscues in handling the ball led to the loss.

"Those three things hurt us significantly," Antone said. "We went eight of 28 from the free throw line.

We'll work on that in practice."

The coach also said that a majority of the turnovers resulted from mishandling of

the ball.

"We've got a young team that needs experience," Antone said. "Even though we lost, I was able to play everyone and let them have first hand knowledge of what the game is all about."

Antone said one of his two top priorities were met Saturday night.

"One was to let all the girls have their chance to play on the court and the other one was to win the game," Antone said.

The Tigers' leading scorer was Kim McNeal with 11 points.

Sophia Ruffin had seven points along with nine rebounds.

Amanda Dunklin accounted for four points and 12 rebounds.

"I thought we played well even though we had the miscues and missed free throws," Antone said. "We'll get better."

Antone said that Ruffin has improved over the past year.

"Sophia has been constantly improving since last year," Antone said. "Like her, I feel the team will improve through the course of the season."

The Tigers will host Calhoun at the Greenville Middle School gym on Dec. 3 before playing at Monroe County in Monroeville on Dec. 7 in their first area game.
