Actually, the funding mix can be changed without a rewrite of the constitution. All it would take is for the legislature to raise the minimum millage amounts for property tax.

First, your note to the editor is that all they are missing the work "be". The Apple corporation didn't help them catch one.

Second, there is public Q&A. That is what "meet and greet" means. Don't pout because you won't have a chance to play your version of "Gotcha" in front of the whole crowd. What people who attend should focus on, is bringing up specific issues that effect this area to the candidates. For example, changing the funding mix or methods for the schools in our county or addressing state assistance for improving county roads.

Roads not more important than office space? Evidentially, you don't live on the roads that are in question. Emergency vehicles not to mention school buses travel on roads that were paved in the 50's. And you believe that the few dollars that we have should go to building walls so that bunny calendars and football schedules can be pinned to them?

On What do you feel should be the number one concern for the county commission?

An increase to the gas tax would be the more direct way to increase funding for roads. The people who use the roads more burn more fuel and then would bear a bigger share of fixing the roads. This would be more akin to a usage tax. Sales taxes are horribly regressive and all a sales tax increase would do would encourage people to shop out of the county or online. I would rather see an increase in tag renewal fees rather than sales tax increase.

If you are worried about the cost of the mailers then you aren't paying attention to the cost of healthcare "reform".

I graduated from GHS in the 90's and I can assure, BF2C1, that we excelled in academics and athletics. The good students didn't make the paper every week, but I can give you a list of people from GHS that have PH.D's as well as careers inside companies that are making significant impacts to our country today.

Salary is not the only component of the cost of an employee. Taxes and insurance also figure into the total cost. Eliminating a route also reduces a bus and the fuel and maintenance it requires.

Taking the buses home is smart if the driver begins and ends the route in the area that he/she lives in. There is no reason to drive the bus from Wald or Forest Home back to Greenville if you have to go get it in the morning.

The lunch program is not the problem either. If that amount of money would make the difference, then the prognosis would not be so dire. We are facing a fundamental problem with the way that Alabama has chosen to fund education. We can choose to address it or bail water as the boat sinks. Sales tax revenue will continue to dry up as internet sales grow with unemployment numbers.
Also, the system could be smarter with their money but that would mean hard and unpopular choices. Changing bus policy and not busing kids from Greenville to Georgiana everyday could save money.

This was done years ago. People that grew up here remember W O Parmer Halloween carnivals. This was brought back by the PTA organizations of both schools. So I think that the underlying message here is that the parents of these students are working hard to provide teachers with the resources that are being cut by the state.
