Leland B. Cobb

Leland B. Cobb, 62, of Greenville, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008 from the chapel of Harrison Funeral Home with the Rev. Blu Braden and the Rev. Kendrick Kelley officiating.

Interment will follow in the Centenary Cemetery with Harrison Funeral Home directing.

He is survived by his wife, Stella Cobb, Greenville; son, Christopher Leland Cobb, Greenville; two sisters, Winkie Brooks and Shelia Payne; one brother, Curtis Cobb, all of Greenville; several nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews.

Mr. Cobb was preceded in death by a sister, Sharon Moon and three brothers.

Mary Anne Blackwell

Mary Anne Blackwell Anderson, 76, of Camden, Alabama died on Saturday January 12, 2008.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, January 14, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church in Camden with the Rev. Joe Cole and Pastor James Perry officiating. Interment will follow at the Camden City Cemetery with Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home of Camden directing.

Mary Anne was born on June 25, 1931 the only child of the late Irene Hutson Blackwell and Marion Orville Blackwell. She graduated from Decatur High School in 1949 and graduated from Alabama College, now the University of Montevallo in 1953. While in college she was a member of the tennis team and excelled as a student and an athlete.

After college, she began her career in child welfare with the Butler County Department of Human Services. She met and married Dr. William Roderick Anderson M.D. on June 2, 1957.

Mary Anne was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William R. Anderson, and both parents Irene Blackwell, Marion Blackwell and many beloved friends. Mary Anne has left a memory that will forever be cherished with her children, William Roderick Anderson Jr. (Kathie), 4 daughters Anne Elisabeth Anderson Lyon (Ike), Mary Amelia Anderson, Alesia Anderson McGraw (Edgar), and Melanie Kay Anderson Shartzer (Steve), ten grandchildren; Roderick Brent Anderson, Matthew Creel Anderson, Molly Elizabeth Anderson, Jacob Anderson Lyon, Philip Hamilton Lyon, Samuel Edward Lyon, William Hutson McGraw, Amelia Anne McGraw, Alesia Dunnam McGraw and Anna Elisabeth Shartzer.

Mary M. M. Payne

Mary Martha Moore Payne, age 95, of Sandy Ridge, died Saturday, January 12, 2008, at L.V. Stabler Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 15, 2008, at Sandy Ridge Methodist Church in Sandy Ridge at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Joe Lizenby officiating and Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home directing.

Interment was held at Payne Cemetery in Sandy Ridge. The family received friends on Monday, Jan. 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Dunklin & Daniels Funeral Home.

Mrs. Payne was born in Andalusia, on January 24, 1912, and lived in Sandy Ridge for 71 years. She was an active member of the Sandy Ridge United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband William Vance Payne who died on March 25, 1993.

She is survived by one daughter Mary Martha (Gene) Autrey of Greenville, two sons, William Moore (Irene) Payne of Medart, Fla., Samuel Harvee Payne of Sandy Ridge, seven grandchildren, William Vance Payne of Frederick, Md., William Mark Payne of Tallahassee, Fla., Jonathan Paul Payne of Pensacola, Fla., Paige Autrey Hannah of Allen, Texas, Susan Payne Turner of Crawfordville, Fla., Rachel Dennis of Sandy Ridge, and Angela Payne Klinkhammer of Auburn, and 16 great-grandchildren.

Chester Leon Salter Sr.

Chester Leon Salter Sr., age 86, of Stallings, N.C. and formerly of Greenville, died Monday, December 17, 2007. The funeral was held Thursday, December 20, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Central Baptist Church with the Rev. William Leverette officiating. Visitation was Wednesday, December 19, 2007 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Harrison Funeral Home in Greenville.

Mr. Salter was born in Butler County in the Friendship Community on May 11, 1921 and resided in Butler County until recently. He was preceded in death by his wife Minnie Lee Hickman Salter. He is survived by his son, Leon Salter and wife, Colleen C. Salter of Charlotte, N.C., and his granddaughter, Leah Elizabeth Salter of San Francisco, CA.

Other surviving relatives are his sisters, Margaret Laubenstein of Manassas, Virginia, Virginia Lasswell of Littleton, Colorado and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Salter joined the Civilian Conversation Corps in 1938 and enlisted in the U.S.

Army at the beginning of WW II where he served in the European Theatre. At the conclusion of the war, he returned to Greenville and began his career as a farmer. He also held numerous additional jobs, retiring from Casey Propane Gas Company. Mr. Salter was a longtime member and deacon of Central Baptist Church.

Myrtle Louise Baker

Myrtle Louise Baker, 65, a resident of McKenzie, died Monday, January 14, 2008 after an extended illness. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 15, 2008 from the Brooks Assembly of god Church with the Rev. Phillip Herring, Sister Helen Grissett and Sister Anna Weaver officiating. Burial in Brooks Cemetery with Johnson Funeral Home of Georgiana directing. Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by her father, Eldridge Gomillion; brother Edward Gomillion and sister-in-law, Christine Gomillion. Survivors include husband, Sam Baker of McKenzie; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Sandra Baker of Georgiana; daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Joe Sanford of McKenzie; mother and stepfather, Mildred Gomillion and Lester Odom of McKenzie; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Barbara Gomillion of McKenzie; sister and brothers-in-law, Eunice and Gene Ballard, and Janette and Winfred Ballard, all of Georgiana; grandchildren, Sean Baker and Samantha Baker of Georgiana and Kathryn and Alicia Jo (AJ) Sanford, both of McKenzie, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Elouise S. Mathew

Elouise S. Mathew, 85, a resident of Ft. Deposit, died Friday, January 11, 2008 at her residence. Funeral services were held at 6 p.m. Sunday, January 13, 2008 at Harrison Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Helms officiating. Interment took place at Highland Memory Gardens in Logan, West Virginia at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 15, 2008.

Survivors include two daughters, Pamela (Dan) Therrien of Fort Deposit and Helen K. (Bill) Porter of Lake Forest, California; sister-in-law, Aleta Marcum of London, Kentucky; a grandchildren, Mark (Debbie) Porter; great-grandchildren, Sara and Daniel Porter, and great-great-grandchild, Jacob Porter.
