Published Tuesday, March 30, 2010
Brantley High School began play at its new baseball facility against Zion Chapel on Monday, and between games, a ceremony was held to formally name it "Wendell Mitchell Field."
Mitchell was in attendance, and he said a few words.
"This is one of the finest fields I've seen in my district, and when I look back at my career as a whole, I think this will be one of the highlights," he said.
Mitchell presented booster club president Shaun Wilcox with a check for $75,000.
Also on hand for the presentation was superintendent Kathi Wallace, mayor Bernie Sullivan, principal Ashley Catrett, athletic director David Lowery, head coach Ashley Kilcrease, members of the board of education and many members of the community and booster club.
Brantley won the inaugural game 11-1 over Zion Chapel.
