Luau time at the library

It was “aloha” to limbo, leis, shishkabobs and more this week at the Greenville-Butler County Public Library during Luau Time at Summer Reading.

During the final week of the annual event, children’s librarian “Miss” Jean Bauer, decked out in full Hawaiian regalia, presented all the 3s, 4s and 5s on Wednesdays with their own colorful lei along with a greeting of “Aloha” and kisses.

Emily Ward was called to the front to show off her own hula skirt and lei.

“Both the boys and the girls wear these colorful flowers on their heads and around their necks . . . and they dance and feast and have a wonderful time at their luaus,” said Miss Jean.

After Miss Jean shared a story about a little Hawaiian girl and her mother, the children made their own flower headbands and then enjoyed an energetic limbo dance to prove just “how low they could go.”

Following the dance, Miss Jean and her helpers passed out “pointy sticks” and an interesting variety of food items – cheese chunks, fresh fruit, teeny shrimp and even pork rinds (“A roasted pig is a big part of every true luau”) – which the children used to create shish kabobs. And what tropical feast would be complete without drinks with umbrellas in them?

Summer Reading “Make A Splash” closes out the year this Friday, July 22 at 3 p.m. with the McWane Center and “The Wonders of Water.” Children of all ages are welcome to attend.
