Greenville’s Piggly Wiggly is “basically new from top to bottom,” said store manager Wesley Nichols.

‘Pig’ gets major makeover

Published Thursday, January 14, 2010

If you haven’t visited the Piggly Wiggly in Greenville in a while, there have been some big changes.

“We are basically new from top to bottom,” said store manager Wesley Nichols.

Gleaming new cooler units, all-new shelving and new wall graphics give the store a fresh, bright and clean look.

Other things have changed in the grocery store, which started out decades ago in the Family Dollar/Pizza Pro building next door, before moving into its present location, the former A&P on Cedar Street.

“We’ve also expanded our production lines across the board - more meats, produce, frozen foods, canned goods. We have more specialty foods now and just a much better selection overall for our customers,” Nichols said.

Nichols, who spent 11 years in the grocery business in Georgiana before moving to the Greenville store last May, says many of his customers have made positive comments about the store’s new look and expanded selection.

“Some folks haven’t been here in a while and they are really surprised to see we have remodeled. We want people to know what we have right here where it is convenient to shop,” said Nicholas. “It’s a good location for people who live and work in the surrounding area. A lot of people just aren’t comfortable driving out on the By-Pass anymore.”

I hope they'll fill the void created when Winn Dixie closed. SuperFoods has good produce and good meat sometimes, but they just don't have the space for specialty items. I won't even mention Walmart. They almost never have what's needed, and it's well known that their business practices include not having enough employees. Can't find what you need at Walmart? Too bad; there's nobody to help you.

And if you find what you need at Walmart, it always takes longer to get checked out than it took to do your shopping because they never have enough registers open.

The upgrades and improvements at Piggly Wiggly have made it my favorite hometown grocery - and all the folks there are so friendly and helpful.

My grandmother would shop just at the Piggly Wiggly because she knew everyone there and because they didn't sell alcohol when the county went wet. I can still remember the manager's face (unfortunately not his name). This was back in the 70s and 80s - so it's been a while. I miss that hometown feeling. And I miss seeing everyone shopping in the downtown area on Saturdays. Oh well, now we're stuck with Walmart and a bunch of empty buildings downtown.

I believe his name was Mr. Lowery, he would always give me a piece of juicy fruit gum when my mama shopped there!

The "Pig" looks great! Now if it would only inspire some of the other "old" businesses to upgrade. It saddens me to see how downtown Greenville has begun to turn to rubble. I can still remember the days of so many people shopping and walking the sidewalks that it was hard to get around. It's wonderful to see the parking lot at the Pig full again!

Mr. Jones, remember the old Oaks Hotel where the Piggly Wiggly parking lot is today? Did you ever play any rounds of golf on the mini-course there? Seems like yesterday that the original Pig was built.
The Mr. Curtis Lowery is who mamakaye was refering to.

I am thrilled to learn about the renovations at the Greenville Piggly Wiggly. I am even more thrilled to see that customers still remember my father, Curtis Lowery, who was the long time assistant manager. I grew up seeing him cheerfully greet customers, give Juicy Fruit gum to children and pull money from his pocket to give to people in need. I wish the "new" Piggly Wiggly the very best.

I should remember Mr. Curtis and his very nice wife Dorothy. I worked at the Piggly Wiggly during part of my teen years. The Piggly Wiggly at one time was located on main street where the 'Chef's Table' is today.
A&P was located down town close to the House of Hendricks (florist) and the Western Union.

I really enjoy shopping at Piggly Wiggly. I can always find everything on my list without any problems. Also, they always have an item of the week that's FREE! That's one of my favorite things about the store!!

The Piggly Wiggy looks great! I'm so happy to see businesses investing in downtown Greenville. Now we need to support the Pig. Shop local! Let's keep downtown Geenville alive!

I remember Mr. Curtis and the Juicy Fruit gum. Wasn't there a Mr. Stinson that worked there?

Please folks, don't shop at Wal Mart. If you want good fruit and vegetables, then WM is NOT the place to go.

Mr. Stinson "grew up" with A&P. After Mr. Lowery retired from Piggly Wiggly, Mr. Stinson came on the scene. A&P was no longer in Greenville by then. Mr. Stinson was also a super manager at the Pig.

I too love the 'Pig'. Everyone is right about Wal-Mart, you can't find anything and can't find help to help you, and if you do get someone, they don't know where anything is. Mr. Nichols is falling into place as a great manager. He's friendly and helpful. I like shoping where everyone knows your name. The staff at the "pig" are great. they always make you feel welcome no matter how busy they are. Come on G'ville shop at the "Pig" and leave Wal-Mart for the tourist.
