Vote 'junior Obamas' out of office
Published Wednesday, January 13, 2010
Dear editor,
Seems like its a dead heat race between the county board of education and the Butler County commissioners to see which entity can put Butler County in bankruptcy first. The board of education put the county in debt for new school buildings and now don't have enough money to see teachers paid and run the schools, which proves the education system in Butler County must be as far down the scale as it can go since it has not produced a single student in the last 50 years with enough brains to hire a superintendent of education.
Now, the county commissioners want to sock the tax payers with more taxes to put a fool elevator in the court house and the sheriff wants as many cars and troops as Montgomery.
Of course these wise men and women couldn't foretell the economic crisis, the worst since the bust of the 1920s, since millions of people were out of work, losing their homes right here in Greenville.
If the good citizens of this county don't rise up and vote these junior Obamas out of office it's gonna be a sad day in Butler County.
Billy Calhoun

Mr. Calhoun,
To begin, the citizens of the County made that "debt" of school building. This was kind of the point of holding that public meeting a couple of years ago. This is a safe political thing to do. If the people get what they wanted (and they did) the elected officials can say "not my fault I did what my People said to do"; that's the point of a referendum type action. I do take issue with your point that the school system hasn't produced a student with brain in fifty years. lol That's just an ignorant statement. I'm also wondering what you mean about junior Obama.

I would assume that Mr. Calhoun means that he thinks the BOE or county commissioners, or whomever, is trying to bankrupt Butler County, much as Obama is bankrupting the US

Those who refuse to get involved in the school system and do their part to help Butler County need to keep their opinions to themselves. I've read other opinions by the author of this editorial, and this individual appears to be against anything and everything that would benefit the children of Butler County. To my knowledge, this person is not a parent, worker, or active volunteer in our school system. The new buildings were a much needed endeavor, and Mike Looney had the guts to get this done. Of course it put us in debt- duh! The citizens knew that before it was voted on. That's one reason why we need to keep our tax dollars IN BUTLER COUNTY. I'm happy to see that the name of the Georgiana school has changed. That should have been done from the beginning. As far as Mr. Calhoun, he has been against Butler County schools for years. I remember his efforts to encourage people to vote NO on the ad velorum tax. It's insane that the citizens even have to vote for this. Mr. Calhoun needs to think about the future of our county. There have been some outstanding students who have graduated from GHS, but Mr. Calhoun's pessimistic attitude hinders him from seeing any good when it comes to our school system. Mr. Calhoun, I believe your opinions reflect a very self-centered attitude with no regard for the future citizens of Butler County.

@Mr. Calhoun: You could not be more wrong about Butler County Schools, and the quality of students that have been produced in the last 50 years....I personally am not old enough to go back 50 years but I CAN speak to the last 30 or so...first because I am a proud Aunt, I would like to recognize my two nephews and 2 nieces who graduated from GHS, with honors. Two, Josh and Rachael Hartman, graduated from Auburn, Rachael went on to UAB and graduated with her doctorate, and is a Physical Therapist. Josh is an engineer. Shae and Andrew graduated from The University of Alabama, Shae is an RN, Andrew has his degree in Finance, and is further pursuing his education at Auburn. Great credit goes to the parents of these kids, but the education they received at Greenville Schools cannot be denied.
I will just mention a few of my fellow GHS Alumnus, and there accomplishments:
Frances Phillips, Dr. of Veterinary Medicine, Selma AL,
Rick Boutwell, United States Air Force, former Thunderbird
Peggy Vonsherie Allen, the deputy director of traffic and safety engineering for DeKalb County, Ga
Dr. Kathy Murphy, assistant Superintendent, Butler Co. Schools,
Ward Thigpen, Assistant Principal, GHS
These are a very few just off the top of my head, but there are many, many more.
In the future, Mr. Calhoun, before you write disparaging comments about the Butler County Schools, check with people who know, we are proud of our alma mater; we are going through some rough times, but we will "conquer and prevail".

I don't know Mr. Calhoun personally, but it doesn't matter if he is a school parent, school volunteer, or a school worker. He pays taxes just as the rest of us do, and that gives him the right to voice his opinion.
And as for obtaining employment after high school and college, I guess almost everyone does that. By the same token, you can probably go back and find people who've graduated from Greenville High, or Georgiana High, gone on to college, and didn't do diddly-squat after that.
Sometimes folks are successful in SPITE of where they went to school.
