Republican forum set for next Thursday
Published Friday, February 5, 2010
Want the chance to meet Republican gubernatorial and congressional candidates in your hometown and hear what their stance is on the issues?
The opportunity is coming to the Camellia City on Thursday, February 11. The Butler County Republican Party is hosting a political forum beginning at 6 p.m. at the Lurleen B. Wallace Community College Conference Center.
"We want to get the word out and have a good attendance at this event. People need to be informed before they go to the polls on June 1," said Cleve Poole, chairman for the BCRP.
Among the gubernatorial candidates running on the Republican ticket planning to attend are Tim James, Bradley Byrne, Kay Ivey, Robert Bentley and Bill Johnson.
Due to a previous commitment, former Chief Justice Roy Moore will not be attending, Poole said.
Judge Tommy Bryan, a Brantley native, who is running for re-election to the Court of Civic Appeals, will also attend.
Second Congressional District hopefuls Martha Roby, a Montgomery City Councilmember and Rick Barber, a small business owner, will also participate in the event, along with Hank Erwin, running for lieutenant governor and Luther Strange, a candidate for attorney general.
The even will be divided into two segments, beginning with an hour-long forum moderated by Poole, in which each candidate will be asked to express their views on how to fix what is wrong with the state. The question will be provided in advance to allow them to well prepared to respond.
The second hour will be a meet and greet, giving all those in attendance a chance to talk with the candidates.
"It's an unusual thing to have such an event in a more rural county like ours, so I hope people will take advantage of the opportunity while it is here," Poole said.

I was tempted to attend this but two things turned me off. First, the questions are given beforehand? What kind of crap is that!? I feel they should already be thinking of all pertinent questions, and possibilities, AND have solutions. Will there be a public Q&A session? I might come to that but I don't want to be yelling don't taze me dude.
I was also bummed Roy Moore wouldn't be there. I was looking forward to a power of Christ compells me moment. At least there's popcorn I hope. :D
To the editors: "them to well prepared to respond" misphrasing.

First, your note to the editor is that all they are missing the work "be". The Apple corporation didn't help them catch one.
Second, there is public Q&A. That is what "meet and greet" means. Don't pout because you won't have a chance to play your version of "Gotcha" in front of the whole crowd. What people who attend should focus on, is bringing up specific issues that effect this area to the candidates. For example, changing the funding mix or methods for the schools in our county or addressing state assistance for improving county roads.

lmao I don't play gotcha. I'd ask pertinent questions of the varied candidates. However, in this state there is absolutely zero difference between the parties. And JM we've covered how to change the funding mix at length in this forum. The ONLY way is to re-write the constitution, alas that won't happen either.

Actually, the funding mix can be changed without a rewrite of the constitution. All it would take is for the legislature to raise the minimum millage amounts for property tax.

jmcoleman, how many licks in the head will it take before you realize that government is broken and electing a new set of extortionist (poly-ticians) is not going to fix anything. Surrendering more control over your land and dwellings(property tax) is not going to satisfy anyone or anything as the corruption level is too extreme to give credibility to any man. If you enjoy paying tax so much why not just hand over everything you earn and be the best little taxpayer that you can be. The government will appreciate this and will expect even more from you next time. The only person on this comment board that makes any sense is INI. We are done as a culture because of too many having the opinion that government still works. Where can one purchase a pitchfork and a torch??????
