Looney offered, will accept new job in Tennessee
Published Wednesday, September 2, 2009
Superintendent Mike Looney has confirmed he has been offered the position of Director of Schools in Williamson County, Tenn. Williamson County board members voted on Wednesday night in a special called meeting to offer Looney the job and notified him shortly after, he said.
Looney was one of five initial candidates contacted about the position by Ray & Associates, an executive search firm hired by the Williamson County board. Looney first interviewed on Aug. 4, was invited back for a second interview on Aug. 18, and two Williamson County board members visited Butler County on Aug. 27 for an on-site visit to the school district. Board members also visited the former school district of another finalist, Dennis Dearden, in Tucson, Arizona, before making their decision on Wednesday night.

"Obviously, I'm grateful for the decision made by the Williamson County Board of Education tonight," said Looney. "There's still obviously a lot of work to do with working out a contract, but my plan is to accept their offer. At the same time I want to express how proud I am in the citizens of Butler County for all of the hard work they have done to help the school district succeed. From the board, to mayors, to the councils, to the county commission, together we have made Butler County a better school district for our children."
Looney said he notified Butler County BOE President Joseph Lisenby of his decision after receiving the call from Williamson County.
Williamson County school officials confirmed they had offered Looney the job, in a released statement from schools spokesperson Carol Birdsong. The board approved a base salary of $168,000 in addition to a standard benefits package, said Birdsong, and she said the board will now enter into contract negotiations with Looney.
Looney is paid $120,000 as superintendent of Butler County schools.

Board members beware. Get it right this time. We want people in there who work for the citizens, not "yes men" for the superintendent. I don't believe winning by 1 vote or getting in unopposed will happen this time around. I just hope ya'll take heed and hear the peoples voices this time around. You are being watched very carefully.

If the Board will do it's homework, they will not have to look any farther than the Central Office to find a perfect replacement. There is a man that truly cares about Butler County and has more than 30 years in our system. He builds up the teachers, is honest and hard working. The best person for the job is Wayne Boswell. I'm a teacher and I know firsthand that he will be there to support ALL the schools, not just for show, but because he really cares.

LOL!!!!!!! I am thankful to have a mayor that is involved with the schools. I am thankful for all the unrequired things the mayor does for the schools. You do realize that this is not a city school system yet the mayor supports it like it is. There are numerous things that he has done for the benifit of the schools in the Greenville that Scooby has no clue about. Just keep on moaning and groaning and LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD!!!! ha ha
On a seperate note, I do hope that the Board will be as active as the Board that sought out Looney. Lord knows that the last thing we need is a warm body sitting behind a desk.

While we appreciate everyone's input and comments, we ask that you please be civil in your discussion. It's one thing to engage in good discourse. It is another to cross a line and make harmful remarks about a person or his or her character. Disagreement or discussion about someone's decisions and policies is encouraged. Personal attacks, though, will not be tolerated nor will slander of any kind. Bottom line: posting here is a privilege, not a right.

There is no need to complain or criticize people who have decided to leave. That is their decision to leave this community and it is our job to pick up and move forward. I am glad that people seem to be interested in who will lead the school system in the future. We need to have an objective approach and find someone who has vision and good judgement. The next leader should come in and evaluate what is working well and what should be changed. We should neither confine ourselves to someone in Butler County nor dissuade internal candidates. I do believe that Butler County is a great place and we don't have to consider ourselves a "stepping stone" system.

If the next Superindendent considers Butler County a stepping stone it will be fine with me as long as he works as hard and accomplishes as much a Mr. Looney did. People have professional goals and Looney is no different. It really is something to think that a system the size of Williamson wants Looney after (according to some) he has done such a horrible job here............... :)

I agree fully with the editor of the Greenville Advocate.
The time has probably arrived to 'close the comments' portion of this web site. Many of the comments are hateful and harmful to others. And much of the so-called information has in fact been disinformation.
Those that want to gossip can join a social group.
Pull the plug.

My biggest problem with Mr. Looney and certain members of the board is the way they handled the naming of the new school building in Georgiana. At no time was any type of meeting with the citizens to discuss the changing of the name held. At the last hour of the board meeting word got out that they were going to name it after Obama. At least they changed their mind on that one. But after seeing citizens concerns on that issue they still made up a name of their own without community input. At no time should the name of our school, Georgiana High School, even been considered changing without a town meeting on the subject. We are really thankful that he had the vision of building a new school and upgrading the other schools in the county. To Mr. Looney, good luck on your new job. To the Board, take your time and get it right.

Were they REALLY going to name the school after Obama? SURELY not. I would think the board would have had more sense than that. The new name of the school though, I feel, shouldn't have even been an issue. A name is a name. It's irrelevant. What matters is the academics and new resourses available to provide our children with a better education. Those attacking Looney and "hating" him just for that is crazy. I wish him luck with his new job in Tennessee. Just don't became a Tennessee football fan! LOL. J/K

Congratulations to Mr. Looney. As a former employee of Butler County Schools, I know that Mr. Looney did the best job he could as superintendent. The fact that he was offered the Director of Schools position for Williamson County, one of the best school districts in the country, is honorable. As a current Tennessee resident, I want to say welcome to my home state Mr. Looney! I know you will enjoy the offerings of Williamson County, Metro Nashville, and our wonderful state. I also want to wish you nothing but success in your new position.

No matter how one may feel about Mr Looney, we cannot deny the success our school system has seen since his arrival. It was a group effort of the school board, faculty, and staff of all of Butler County but thanks to a great leader. We cannot blame Mr Looney for wanting to further his career and yes, maybe Greenville was a stepping stone for him but so what? Look at all we gained from his experience. I wish Mr Looney nothing but great things and hope he and his family have a prosperous year.

i believe it is a good move for Looney. The people of Georgiana wish him well. The major contribution he had while in office for us was to help eliminate the history and identity of a town by renaming Georgiana High school. The new school is a good thing for our youth but it shouldn't have cost us the name of a 100 year old school. If the magnet school was a true magnet school by definition the people of Georgiana may have been more understanding. The way Looney and certain board members attempted to rename our school covertly was shameful. Good luck Mr. Looney. The people of Georgiana wish you had received this opportunity two years ago.

There isn't anyone in house to become superintendent. We need to hire a firm and search the country for a new one. Best of luck Mr. Looney. And then vote the current board OUT.

I really dont think anyone is bashing Looney because they are upset he decided to leave. Everyone is pretty excited about that exept for the few that apparently are still in the dark. I am a former employee (by choice) and I just hope they find someone that cares more about the people in the communities and not just his own image. I mean seriously.... Why exactly were the comments disabled while the people from Tennessee were here for Looney?? Somebody was trying real hard to hide the truth and the real image of the man hiding behind the polished one. Oh well we certainly wouldnt wanna do anything to hinder him from leaving. Good for us but you really gotta kinda feel sorry for them and the fact that the man they think they are getting is nothing like the true Mike Looney. If so many people in Butler county feel the same way about the man then there has to be something wrong. Oh well GOOD LUCK TENNESSEE!!! LMAO

I cannot speak as to why exactly comments were disabled. I can speak to the fact that when folks get a wild hair.... they say things that aren't exactly the truth.
I say this because there is a BIG difference between rumor and innuendo, and FACT. The fact, Ma'am, is that before this guy arrived all I ever heard about education was how it facillitated football.
Now folks are actually discussing education; and that, in my humble opinion, is a good damn start.

Well mine , Sir, were not rumor or innuendo. My opinions of Looney are ones that I formed while employed with the school system from things that I witnessed myself. I dont thrive on speading half truths from people that just like to stir in it. If I say something it is from an experience I have had first hand. I dont rely on others to form my opinion; I am able to do that without any help.
Also I dont intend to try to change anyones opinion. Your opinion is yours to do freely what you like with it. It is a comment section and i intend on using it to voice my opinion.. It is what I feel. Im not asking anyone to agree with it or like it even. This is my freedom as an american. I respect your opinion so respect mine.

Mystic is right. The man wants to move on. So what if he did do everything here only to pad his resume? Were they bad things? Did he pad his resume by making steps backward? Of course not. He has done well. The board has continued to fail us, and Looney has made mistakes as well. I hope none of you think our next super won't make any mistakes.
Thank you Mr. Looney.

Your opinions have been respected. I agree with the rest but don't know where your venom's coming from. Say what you want. I was addressing the possibility of why the comments were shut off. I wasn't necessarily talking about something you'd have to say in particular.
