Cougars outrun Raiders, face Cornerstone
Published Wednesday, October 28, 2009
CCA head coach Roland Jones and his CCA Cougars continue their march toward the Class A AISA 2009 playoffs with a 21 to 7 victory over their longtime rival, the South Montgomery Academy Raiders of Grady, Ala., last Friday night.
But it was not easy, as the Raiders took an early 7-0 lead over the Cougars on a 4 yard touchdown run by junior running back Jared Edare, as he led the Raiders rushing attack with 137 yards on 30 carries.
CCA took the lead for good late in the 2nd quarter as senior QB Pete King bullied his way into the Raider end-zone from one yard out. Then he connected with Austin Brown on a 2 yard pass to make the 2 point conversion to give CCA a one point advantage over the home team Raiders as they headed into the locker room at the half.
Coming out to start the 2nd half, the Cougars built on their one point lead when senior running back Tyler McGough scored from 18 yards out to give the Cougars a 14 to 7 advantage. Junior Cougar running back Kyle Furr closed out the scoring early in the 4th quarter when he bolted into the South Montgomery end zone, sealing the final score – CCA – 21, SMCA – 7.
Senior Nick Kilpatrick was the top cat in the rushing department, as he had 125 yards on 12 totes, and his running mate Tyler McGough had 75 yards on 7 carries.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Cougars were led by Michael D’Arville who had 14 tackles, Judd Sutley had 12 tackles, and the Moses boys, Will and Cody, chipped in with 11 and 10 tackles each.
This week is the big show-down that everyone in Cougar nation has had circled on their calendar, as they face the 8th ranked Cornerstone Christian Chargers, who stand at 9-0 on the season, as they try to avenge last year’s 56-14 drubbing.
The Cougars will play at home this week; game time is 7 p.m
