Luverne's Elliott honored at ACEA Conference

The outstanding work and contributions of individuals and county/city community education programs were recognized by the Alabama Community Education Association (ACEA) at the 2009 Spring Conference in Perdido Beach.

Crenshaw County was well represented at the state conference. Those attending included Director of the Lurleen B. Wallace Community College Luverne Center and Crenshaw County Schools Community Education Program Supervisor, Ms. Laura Petrey Elliott, Superintendent of Schools, Ms. Kathi Wallace, and the Mayor of Brantley and LBW Community College Foundation Board Member, Mr. Bernie Sullivan.

The awards received by the Lurleen B. Wallace Community College/Crenshaw County Schools Community Education Program were

The Presidents’ Award - presented to Ms. Laura Petrey Elliott for excellence in leadership and service as the 2008-2009 President of ACEA.

The Peggy Spain McDonald Bright Ideas Award - presented to the LBW Community College/Crenshaw County Schools Community Education Program for the “Seniors in Motion” Program.

The Seniors in Motion Program, offered to senior citizens, includes free movies on Monday afternoons from 1:30—3:30 pm; free exercise classes on Monday and Thursday from 4—5 pm; and free knitting classes on Monday from 5:30—6:30 pm. The senior group also partners with LBW Community College English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) students in learning English and the knitting class knits helmet caps for the troops in Iraq.
