The Highland Home School Class of 1959 recently held its 50th reunion at It Don't Matter Restaurant in Highland Home.

HHS Class of '59 holds 50th reunion

On Friday, May 22, 20 classmates of the HHS Class of 1959 and 19 guests gathered at It Don’t Matter Restaurant in Highland Home for a buffet luncheon and reunion.

The reunion, organized and hosted by Fannie Smith Cannon and Brenda DePriest Layton, began with a “getting re-acquainted” session and followed by lunch. A candle-lighting ceremony was held remembering deceased classmates Delma Ruth Baker, Lamar Evans, Jimmy Holland, Ronny Landers, Dorothy Schmitt Lisenby, Jesse Taylor and Thanna Walker Grayson. Each classmate present gave a brief synopsis of his/her life over the past fifty years.

After adjournment, a number of the reunion party drove to the Highland Home School for a tour of the facilities by Principal Joe Eiland.

Classmates (and spouses) present were: Dee (Eileen) Bennett, Terry Gregory, Alford (Emily) White, all of Highland Home area; Linda Bowden Thierfelder, Charles (Ellen) Massey, James (Margaret) Reeves all of Honoraville; Charles (Paulette) Beasley, Brenda DePriest Layton, Fannie Smith (William) Cannon, Danny (Jean) Thomas all of Montgomery; Ella Sue Davis (Fred) Mims of Florence, SC; Ann Duncan (Gordon) Lacy of Bremen, KY; Syble Eggers DeFee and Linda Rhodes Mitchell both of Prattville; Ronny (Charlotte) Hoffman of Atmore; Sue McKenzie Collins and Frances Owens Jordan both of Greenville; Betty Turner (William) Leverette of Luverne; William (Farrell) Wilkerson of Newnan, GA; and Eleanor Wolfe Hoomes of Roopville, GA.

The only surviving instructor, vocational ed teacher Robert (Helen) Bugg of Wadley, was the recipient of much praise and admiration.
