City hosting 2010 Dixie Youth tourney

Published Tuesday, July 28, 2009

Next year will be a big one for Dixie Youth Baseball in Greenville. The city will be hosting the 2010 Dixie Youth Majors State Tournament, an event sure to have an economic impact on the Camellia City.

The city was awarded the bid for the tournament for $7,505, said council member Ed Sims, who is assisting the Parks and Recreation Department with preliminary planning.

“This is going to bring a lot of people into our town and it’s going to fill up our hotels,” said Mayor Dexter McLendon. “That’s going to help our YMCA.”

In March, the city enacted a license tax of $1 per room, per day as an occupancy fee on hotels in the city. Sims said the tournament would bring 11 teams from across the state, including the Greenville host team. Dixie Youth Majors is for 11-12 year-olds.

“They can’t drive themselves, which means there’s going to be a lot of family with them,” said McLendon.

Sims said tournament is scheduled for Friday, July 23 to Thursday, July 29, 2010. It will be played at the city’s softball complex on Pineapple Highway.

The city’s Dixie Youth teams play at Day Park, but Sims said the softball fields are more easily accessible from I-65 for out-of-towners.

“It’s going to take a lot of volunteers and a lot of help,” said Sims. “We can do as good a job as anyone else.”

This year’s Dixie Youth Majors tournament is in Lincoln, Ala.

Looks as if Greenville has landed something that the locals and out of towners with enjoy attending. The complex is nice and is something that Greenville can be proud of.
What is troubling to me is the 'eye-sore' on the left side of the drive going to the facility. Run down trailers, trash on private property, and broken down cars. Hardly what we would want the vistors to see.
If ever there was a need for a 'Lady Bird Fence' this would fit the case.

Once again BF2, I totally agree with you. With a year to prepare ahead of us maybe something can be done about the "eye sore". And as for you Truthtalker, are you nuts, sporting events in the Greenville area have always brought in revenue. Not so many years back Greenville hosted a state football playoff game that had in excess of 7000 people to attend at $6 bucks a headand $5 bucks to park do the math. A baseball tournament at this level will not only fill our hotels, but fill our restaurants, gas stations, stores etc. It will be great for our economy congrats to parks and rec. for landing this great event.

Oh, my goodness! How technical must we get? "Extra" revenue -- "different" revenue. The bottom line difference is that it will be revenue for our city that would not come our way without the hosting of the 2010 Dixie Youth Tournament. Good job, City of Greenville. I'm looking forward to seeing some good baseball next year.

BF2C1, I rarely agree with you but I must say here that your comments above hit the nail on the head!! Well said!
