BOE officials approve new K-5 textbooks

All of Butler County’s K-5 students will receive new math textbooks in the coming year, thanks to the federal stimulus package monies.

The BOE voted last week to approve the purchase of the new texts, which will bring the system into alignment with statewide policies and better prepare students for standardized testing.

The textbooks, along with workbooks for two years of use, will be purchased for $125,000.

The board also voted to renew its National School Board Association membership at a cost of $4, 250.

Members of the Greenville Middle School Math Team were also recognized for their successes at several area and state tournaments, “many involving students at much larger, wealthier systems than ours,” said their proud sponsor, Kathy Pickens.

The following personnel updates were given in a report:

n Resignations: Leah Owens, Elementary/Middle School Math teacher, Greenville Middle School.

Leave of Absence Requests: Michelle Farnum, English teacher, Greenville Middle School; Marie Jones, Special Education Services Aide, W.O. Parmer Elementary School.

- Re-employment: Lee Ann Odom, Instructional Aide, McKenzie School; Sherial Scott, CNP Worker, W. O. Parmer Elementary and Daisy Ruffin, CNP Worker, Greenville Middle School

- New Employees:Cherrie Lawson, Special Education Services Aide, Greenville High School; Terry Cook, Special Education Services Aide, GHS; Amy Smothers, Special Education Services Aide, Butler County Magnet School; Ashley Pierce, School Nurse, WO Parmer/Greenville Elementary School; Lacy Gray, Elementary Teacher, Greenville Middle School and William Duncan, Science Teacher, GMS.

- A special called meeting of the Butler County BOE will be held at 6 p.m. August 4 at the new board room.
