Humane Society has busy spring on tap
Published Tuesday, February 17, 2009
Members of the Butler County Humane Society had a full agenda to discuss at last week's monthly meeting, with a number of events on tap to raise funds and raise awareness of the plight of homeless animals in the county.
*On Saturday, April 11, a Spring Clean event is set for the Pet Laundry on North Conecuh. Volunteer pet scrubbers and dryers are needed for this fundraiser.
*An adoption event is set for April 18 and 19 at Calico Fort in Fort Deposit with Kandys Killough heading the event, assisted by Faye Finney of Fort Deposit.

*An old-fashioned favorite is also in the works, with a Cake Walk/Bark in the Park being planned at the fairgrounds for one of the first two weekends in May. A photo op is also being planned for that day in conjunction with the society's 2010 pet calendar.
*Fran Stallworth is heading up the cookbook fundraiser committee. Stallworth is already collecting recipes (no desserts for now, please). Pictures and stories of special pets are also welcome.
*A spring fundraising letter is also being drafted.
In other news, BCHS president Herbert Morton was delighted to announce the City of Greenville is now extending the back roof of the animal shelter.
"Unfortunately, during the construction the number of dogs at the shelter is limited," Morton said.
"Hopefully, they will be finished very soon."
Morton reported the City is also working a new Standard Operating Procedure for the shelter, which will include special provisions for a volunteer staff (volunteers have not been allowed on the premises in recent months, due to the lack of a way to securely lock away drugs used in putting down animals).
Morton encourages anyone interested in animal welfare to join the group at the next meeting, slated for 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 11 at The Chef's Table downtown.

I thought that we had a leash law in Greenville. Just this morning I saw a white bulldog try to bite someone near the Ritz Theater. This is the very same bulldog that is seen near the city hall often times. The dog will actually lay down near the front doors entering into city hall. Does the dog belong to the mayor and has been given 'special status'? This very dog has been roaming free on the streets of Greenville for months and in plain view of police officers. This dog belongs to someone because he has a collar. A crippled black Labrador also has special rights down town and roams at will. Have been told that he belongs to a local attorney. I have some friends that have some really bad dogs that would like to do some window shopping on main street. So do we have a leash law or what?

Numerous people are mauled by 'friendly' dogs (the extremely friendly pit bulls that we have learned to love) every day, and some are even killed. A woman got mauled (her face nearly torn off and both hands bitten off) by a 'friendly chimp' just yesterday. And it is not unusual to hear of small children squezzed to death by pythons in the home. The dog in question may not be dangerous. So do we have a leash law or not? If we do then enforce it. If we do have a leash law and it is not being enforced, then abolish it. I could tell you a story about a past member of the Greenville city council and his dog and the problems this dog was causing just off of Beeland Street. Instead, I will leave it along.

We do indeed have a leash law (or at least that's what I was told by the Shelter folks). As to the attorney's dog I suggest you call the cops on it.

E911 got a phone call by a citizen on main street this morning about the bulldog. The attorney needs to get the Lab off of the street and get him some medical help. Most of the people out getting their daily walk have dogs on a leash.

Golly guys, what do all these comments have to do with raising money for the shelter? BF2, do you always bitch about something that's going on in our fair city or is it everything you hate? We need to support all things around us or I guess we need to get out of dodge! The shelter does much for our city and needs everyone to help. They have a hard job and with limited resources they continue to work long hours to get this done.

Riverrin, dogs running free around this little town are not going to help the situation (population problem) at the animal shelter (thus the funding problem). If you work there you are going to find out first hand. I am posting under (Post a Comment) and not posting under (Bitching).
You state "We need to support all things around us". Only a damn fool would do that. Bet I have been in this town a great deal longer than you. If I hated it I would have been long gone. Just do not like to see the 'so-called new elected officals' destroy it. Many of my friends feel the same way.

I agree that the shelter needs all the help it can get. I also wish that Butler County had the resources to help with horses that are being starved and abused in the area. Several people have horses despite not being able to feed and care for them properly. With this economy, I'm afraid the situation with horses (and other pets) will only get worse.

When I said support all things...I meant Fund raising things...not steeling cars Mike, I know you are more intelligent than to really think such a thing. Of course I certainly am not claiming that I could be an idiot about some things but not a complete idiot. Sorry BF2 if I hurt your feelings but you never have anything positive to say. And to stay on topic it would be great if the shelter could raise enough money to care for large animals as well as small animals. I to am aware of the mistreatment of the larger animals in our area.

How were they not on topic? It's about the animal shelter and its not that big a stretch ( I don't think so) to make the observation that there are indeed dogs running around Greenville at will when there IS a leash law. As I said before call the cops.

Thanks Mike for not stealing my car...remember I'm new at this...I'm understanding you and Rob more with each post. Thanks for getting me straight. We still need money for the shelter and those loose dogs.

Oh yeah, to clarify my statement I'm not new to "This", just new to this forum...and when I meant staying on topic...I meant that the article was about fund raising for the shelter, I meant I thought we should be talking about Fund Raising for the shelter. I'll try to be more clear in the future.

I see no need to stay on topic in this forum. I mean discussions (good ones anyways) are always dynamic. But there's no need to apologize.
Mike- I have two solutions.
One: We call the Sheriff instead of the City police and tell them the dog is a mule for an interstate drug cartel.
Two: It'd been mentioned that there's a white bulldog. We could call the cops and tell them there's a white dog in a black dog's neighborhood. BAM! In a flash there will be five cruisers finding out what he's doing in the wrong neighborhood.
lol And before you go off it's a well known policy (I even asked a cop and he affirmed) that if you're white and driving in the wrong section of town (IE World St. etc) you WILL be pulled over for doing absolutely nothing.

I AM SHOCKED!!! A red blooded flag waving meat eating AMERICAN like you Michael does NOT advocate self defense!? What's this world coming to? Pretty soon you're going to say "hey take the money they're giving it away!" Actually I am surprised (kinda not really) that you wouldn't be all over the dog's owners for letting them out without a leash and breaking the law. You do stand for the rule of law correct? Not being jocular just making sure.
