Usually, when a dog drags up a “present” for its owners, it’s something common like a stick or an old shoe.

A Luverne resident got a surprise earlier this month when a dog produced several ounces of marijuana in bags.

“We got a call over to a residence, and once we got there, we found that the dog had drug up somebody’s marijuana,” said Luverne Police Department Investigator David Sankey.

The discovery happened in the area of Hicks and Willis streets.

“We’ve got several ounces of weed that looks like it came off a block,” Sankey said.

Investigators also found 12 smaller bags, one of which was empty.

“We think the dog might have eaten one of them,” Sankey said.

The street value of the marijuana is estimated to be between $1,500 and $2,000.

No arrests have been made, and the incident is still under investigation.

And what about the dog’s health after eating a bag of marijuana?

“I went by the other day, and he was running around, so I guess he’s ok,” Sankey laughed.
