Candidates should visit Butler County

This week, it was noted that a large number of signs for those running for the 2nd Congressional seat finally began showing up in the Butler County area. We're actually happy about that because it means, or it really means that someone who is working on these various campaigns actually know their way to Butler County, Alabama.

It is with some regret that there have been times that we have felt like the red-headed step-children of the 2nd Congressional District. We don't have a Fort Rucker or a Maxwell Air Force Base in our backyard and therefore, the jogs those two entities create are far greater than what we have here.

We do thank the Republican candidates who attended the recent forum. It was good to see four of the six actually pay a visit to the Camellia City. Rep. David Grimes had already come through the prior week. Oddly, on the Democratic side, we haven't seen any of those candidates come to town stumping for their cause.

Butler County is very much a part of this congressional district and we expect to be treated just the same as Enterprise or Dothan or Troy for that matter. In the past five years, we have had tremendous economic growth on our own and we have one of the lowest unemployment figures in the state.

We don't want to hear promises from candidates that our county will play a vital role if they're elected, because we tend to remember things like that. Also, we're not afraid to call them on that promise.

So to the candidates who want the votes of our local citizens, our suggestion is to visit this county and go door to door if you have to. Get the votes you need and if you promise not to forget Butler County when you get to Washington, don't forget us.

It's sad for us to have to put this view out there, but you can only be forgotten for so long before you tire of it.
